Ashby Village is a community of people over age 50 united by the desire to remain in the culturally rich, multigenerational neighborhoods that they know and love. Ashby Village connects members with each other and with the resources they need to remain active and independent.
The purpose of this project is to support increased community growth. Ashby Village currently supports a total of more than 300 members. The number of events rose from 140 in 2013 to 242 in 2014, and participation in those events more than doubled from 946 to 1915. Ever since the creation of the village foundation, community building and allowing active communication has been one of the core missions. Unfortunately, the village has never been able to offer a comprehensive technology platform for online communication.
It is an opportune time to develop a web application to address the problem of group communication primarily because there is a specific and time-sensitive problem that needs to be addressed, and will integrate with other modules to form a unified platform for Ashby Village. In the future, other villages will use this platform to replace their community building applications.
Cal Blueprint is a student-run UC Berkeley organization devoted to matching the skills of its members to our desire to see social good enacted in our community. Each semester, teams of 4-5 students work closely with a non-profit to bring technological solutions to the problems they face every day.
