Dive In

A Docker extension that helps you explore a docker image, layer contents, and discover ways to shrink the size of your Docker/OCI image.

Built on the top of excellent CLI tool - https://github.com/wagoodman/dive

Installation

Make sure your Docker desktop supports extensions. This extension can be installed from [Docker Hub] (https://hub.docker.com/extensions/prakhar1989/dive-in) or in Docker Desktop.

Development

Go through the official docs to understand the basic setting up of the Docker extension.

Useful commands for setting up debugging

$ docker extension dev debug prakhar1989/dive-in
$ docker extension dev ui-source prakhar1989/dive-in http://localhost:3000

Make sure you run npm run start in the ui/ folder.

Stuck on Analyzing

Simple one, after fresh install, hitting analyze on a 16-bullseye-slim image, it just gets stuck analyzing

If I navigate away and come back it's back to the regular "Analyze" button

Installation Fails

When attempting to install from either Docker Desktop or Docker Hub, an error message is thrown:

Dive was not found. Click the button below to install Dive

However, clicking the button doesn't resolve the issue, nor does manually installing dive CLI. I'm using Docker Desktop v4.15.0 on MacOS (M1) v12.6.2.

Explore layer contents

Hi, I found your extension and I think it is very useful, if layer contents exploration would really available as in the CLI tool you build on top of.

Do you plan to implement it?

Container always running

I found that container always running when Docker Engine is running is not energy efficient and drains my battery since it prevents Docker Engine Resource Saver to turn on.

Can you please fix it?

Indication of how long image analysis takes

Hello! I am trying to use Dive In extension on Docker Desktop, however the Analyze just keeps spinning round and round. I tried on a few different images, including the prakhar1989/dive-in:0.0.8 image and left it overnight but it was still stalled.
Am I missing something, or is there a way to look at logs?

Installation fails on M1 Mac

Just tried installing it on M1 Mac, failed with following message:

OS version: 12.6.3
Docker Desktop v: 4.15.0 (93002)
Docker Engine v: 20.10.21
