Have you been moving/resizing the window?
Well I can't repeat that if word is totally not visible, if it's barely visible it surely appears on status bar, but I think it's normal.

Well, I have resized NPP window (using winkey + right arrow).
I have quite long text in NPP and word wrap enabled.
The words are actually partially visible, but I think that the button should not be drawn on the status bar — only inside the text area.
I left it to you for decide.

Well actually yes, maybe it has a sense to make it child of editor window rather than whole Notepad++
