programmingfonts's Introduction

ProgrammingFonts

If you have a try of another kind of programming font, maybe you can have a new different feeling of coding which will make you feel fabulous, so just have a try!

What's this?

This is a collection of programming fonts, just share this with the programmers.

Which kind of font can be programming font?

The programming fonts must have these features.

  • Monospaced

Monospaced is the most important features for programming fonts, because monospaced fonts are easy for coding which must be easy to check or align or compare.

  • English characters

Most of the important and popular programming languages are build on English characters, so the programming fonts must support English characters.

  • Anti-confusion

All of the characters must be easily identified. There must be no confusion about some similar characters, such as l and 1, o and 0, i and l, g and 9.

programmingfonts's Issues

Add Lilex

Lilex

Open source, Monospace, ligature support and there are also NerdFont versions out there (potentially just patched)

I would have created a PR myself, but i am not sure how exactly it should be structured.
Is a submodule fine? Redirect to the repo? Clone and paste the repo?

Maybe this could also be some sort of To-Do to create some small header explaining how to add a font to this repo.

Various license violations

Hi, you have a nice collection here! Even some I haven't seen before.

There are a bunch here that don't allow you to redistribute the font files via this repo and website though. Including:

  • Akkurat
  • Consolas
  • Andale Mono
  • Courier New
  • Monaco

Some of these had been distributed by Microsoft around 2000, but can only be redistributed in their original form (.exe files) and with inclusion of the EULA. Others, like Consolas and Akkurat are commercial and their licenses certainly don't allow putting them on a website for free. Just so you don't get in trouble here ;)

If you run into anything new, let me know at https://github.com/braver/programmingfonts!

monokai

Do you have the font of monokai?

How about we collaborate?

Hi, I'm the author and maintainer of programmingfonts.org. Our projects have lived side by side for close to 10 years now. Mine is roughly a year older, has more fonts and metadata, typically ranks higher in search engines, and attracts more outside contributions. But this one arguably has the better domain name (.com) and more stars in GitHub.

All in all, I think the community would be better served, and our energy spent more purposefully, if we combine our efforts. It seems you're working on a website that tries to do what mine already does. I could save you weeks of development time there. I'm sure there are ways in which you could contribute to that, and to the font listing. And the community would be helped more efficiently by having one repo to go to, to suggest additions and changes.

So, that was my thinking: let's explore how working together could improve both projects.

Consider adding Codetta to the list of coding fonts.

Codetta is a font with special ligatures for C#.
It was developed to have a clear and crisp appearance with typically used font sizes of 9Pt and 10Pt but also to scale well on high dpi monitors.
It was taken care that it doesn't use much space and has a better readabillity than the commonly used Consolas in VisualStudio.

Any hybrid font?

Any Chinese-English hybrid programming font?
I know there's Consolas-with-Yahei, but its line space and word space are larger than the original Consolas. And it goes wrong sometimes, which I guess is because it's not made by professionals.

New release 2.0?

Hi team @ifeegoo and @my-gitty,

I noticed that the last release of the repo was in 2015. Should we spend some time working on the repo and create a 2.0 release?

We can clean up and pull freshest version of all fonts in the repo to work towards the 2.0.

What do you think?

For inclusion of proportional fonts

The programming fonts must have these features.

  • Monospaced

Monospaced is the most important features for programming fonts, because monospaced fonts are easy for coding which must be easy to check or align or compare.

I disagree with this. Monospacedness is necessary only when alignment is used, which is not always. If I don't have to align, I prefer proportional fonts. Some characters don't fit nicely into a grid for all characters. Even just widening the glyphs of ‘m’, ‘w’, ‘@’ make a monospaced font look better usually.

There are several proportional fonts good for programming:

Other fonts may be good for programming. I like Verdana for programming in languages with long names and not much punctuation, like Java.
