As we do this, we should consider whether this core support -- metadata, typechecking, and any desugaring that happens during compilation -- would make sense as an independent OSS spec/library.

YAML does support defining custom types using !, as well as a set of "out of the box" language-agnostic ones. This could be a good starting point.

For the most part, this is handled by the decision to leverage real MetaMu languages, plus the encoding in MuPack/MuIL. However, this work item tracks the corresponding language-independent implementation in the Mu toolset itself.

The language independent parts are there. I have filed #64 to track some of the more "sophisticated" ideas, like non-null, ranges, and regex literals.
