The ideal view range for ship-to-ship TNT combat is 750m+
Normal servers use a render distance of 12c* (192m) at a cost of 250MB/player.
A render distance of 64c (1024m) uses 3GB/player.
A render distance of 32c (512m) uses 800MB/player.
The current proposal is a complete overhaul of the Minecraft source code that allows the server to only load 12c around each player, but players loading chunks within 64c of another player will cause those chunks to be sent to both players.
