I've implemented this here: https://github.com/harpolea/pyro2/tree/cython
Before I pull request it: shall I strip out the f2py entirely? It's currently still fairly easy to switch between the two, and I don't think it would be too difficult to leave up to the user via e.g. compiler flags.

I tried out using numba
instead for the compressible solver and simply using a few @njit
decorators gives a 20-100x speedup for the interface functions (vs plain python) - this might be a nicer alternative to using cython?

Cool, I've made a numba
branch and shall see if I can get similar speedups for the other fortran routines
