#Rackspace Developer Center

How to contribute to the blog

If you use Vagrant: https://github.com/raxdevblog/vagrant-blog

Otherwise, there are several ways to contribute:

###Fork/Pull Request Method

  1. Fork the repo, clone your fork to your local machine
  2. Install Ruby with RVM: $ curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --rails --autolibs=enabled --ruby=1.9.3
  3. In the devsite directory, run bundle install.
  4. In the same directory, create a new post: rake new_post['The title of your post']
  5. Edit the file that is created. See section below on how to write articles.
  6. Be sure to leave "published: false" on your post so we can schedule content for posting.
  7. Check your work with rake generate && rake preview (You can reach it at http://localhost:4000)
  8. Submit a pull request with your new post

###Gist/Issue Method

Create a private gist or your post in Markdown format and submit an issue here.

Writing articles

  • Posts are created in /source/_posts and are written in Markdown. Here is a format guide for Markdown.
  • Images should be placed in /source/images. Read here on how to use the img tag in your posts.
  • Posts with YouTube Videos: {% youtube 12345678 %} where "12345678" is the video ID.
  • Further reading: Blogging with Octopress

devsite's Issues

Exceptional brands represented on site

Exceptional has several brands:
Exceptional.io
Airbrake.io
RedisToGo
others?

We need to meet with Ben Arent, Exceptional's Product Guru, to determine which brands should be represented and how they should look within dev.rackspace.com.

CDN / Minify Bootstrap

The current style.css is ~255KBs and uncompressed. Minify-ing this or even CDNing this via Cloud Files / bootstrapcdn.com

quick examples for SDKs on home page

With a dedicated SDK page; we can put in tabbed content on the landing page to show a quick/short example to hook users; each language should be a tabbed piece of content, and the code example an embedded gist

Code samples on front page

We lost all the code samples on the front page. I liked those ...
Can we find something interesting to put back up?

Add site visit stats to the page

After discussing traffic with Kord, how hard is it to add "visits" to the page so that people can see how many others are visiting? Thoughts?

Is this something that we can add by Friday, or do we add it at a later date?

Thanks,

Need a cool 404 page

For docs.rackspace.com we just point over to the rackspace.com 404 page. So you go to docs.rackspace.com/loadbalancer and it tries to search for loadbalancer on rackspace.com.

Analytics

We need to start tracking basic google analytics type of information on the site:
Unique visitors
Time on site
What gets clicked
When we link off to another site track that we sent them that traffic (Private Cloud downloads or public activations)

A/B testing on changes

I would like to be able to perform A/B tests on changes to the site to determine our impact over time to the user experience.

feed magnet

Eric brought up the idea of using feedmagnet to help collect data from social media feeds. This could allow us to pull in online conversations about various projects.

Link to the Github Repo for the Site Itself

Placing a link to the repo for the site itself will serve a few purposes, including streamlining bug reports and feature requests. It also indicates we are all about Open Source.

OpenStack language

Feedback from Lew, use more OpenStack language, Example: "Build Great Apps on an OpenStack Cloud".

Content change to 'Rackspace Public Cloud Services'

From a quick preview, it looks like this is a smattering of our products. Until I did a hover I found out it was actually linking to docs. Should we update that to 'Rackspace Public Cloud Service Docs' or 'Rackspace Cloud Docs'

Can not parse in blog content

Removing the blog from launch; currently we can't parse the atom feed due to the access-control-allow-origin (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same_origin_policy) this makes it pretty much a non-starter to parse it using javascript for now.

Need to revisit once we get the names/cnames/etc in place - or put in an alternative feed url, or move the php files from php templates into jekyll/octopress and combine the code base.

Include bare metal (dedicated) somehow

I would like to think how we can get dedicated servers represented here. Talk to Ev (Mailgun founder), he is a dev AND a big believer in dedicated gear. Right now we present the option as Private or Public but there is a 3rd component we leave off - Baremetal.

3rd choice

Add Airbrake to Dev Site

Can we add Airbrake to the dev site. We can help exceptions in app, on backend processes and even help capture chef errors. Let me know how I can help and what content we need for it.

Footer

Conrad would like to see the Rackspace footer removed from the Dev site.

CNAME changes / redirects

Need to focus on one site and redirect other sites to it. Examples:

devops.rackspace.com -> developer.rackspace.com/blog
dev.rackspace.com -> developer.rackspace.com

Legal use of OpenStack

From Niki Acosta:
This one is questionable: Our open source and fully supported developer tools help you get started using any OpenStack cloud in minutes.
This is a clear violation: Rackspace can help you install OpenStack® on your own servers in minutes.
Suggestion: Deploy Rackspace Private Cloud powered by OpenStack free in minutes!

ASK:
Have Sabina in legal review all the places where we use OpenStack.

Support the "baby" devs

It seems we have lost some of our support of the "baby" devs (devs not already immersed in cloud). Part of the reason people choose Rackspace is because of the perception that we are easier to use than AWS. How do we get the we are easy AND friendly message across:

quickstart guides
walkthroughs
videos
etc

Unify buttons

The buttons all act slightly differently on hover and click (except the green and blue ones). They also have different gradients and shadows. Just make them match the ones on Rackspace.

Add title over the Public Cloud button?

Should we add some text over the public cloud button, similar to the private cloud one? Maybe something like "Use our cloud anywhere - in minutes, without lock-in"
