win11debloat's Issues

README list of removed apps is out of sync with script

The README list for removed apps contains Microsoft.ZuneMusic (the README for NOT removed apps also has Microsoft.ZuneMusic), but Microsoft.ZuneMusic is not in the list in the actual ps1 script.

I'm guessing the script is fully authoritative of what should be removed or not.

Custom Configuration completed without making any changes

I wanted to remove full app list, but no matter what option I choose from the custom config section it always ends without making any changes. thanks.

pd as always, immediately after posting this I discovered the issue only happens when running the ps1 file directly but running the run.bat file it works.

Attempt to remove Microsoft Edge reported as failed

Good morning. As expected, for what Microsoft is known for, its product Microsoft Edge is pre-installed, ready to be polluting. It seems a common knowledge that Microsoft made it sticky, knowing that being a highly unwanted component, like so many others, a knowledgeable user would attempt soon or later to get rid of it. However, surprisingly, the option 3 covers it as a removal target. It didn't surprise me when this script reported a failure with exit code subsequent to the attempt to remove said application.

What makes the notification of a failed attempt problematic is that it cannot be determined what justified it. Unlike what is notified, a search for this application - e.g. against "microsoft edge" - in the tool that is accessible via Windows indicates no found target. Is that an indication that after all it might have been successfully removed?

Pressing the `ctrl` key causes the terminal to close

Hello. When attempting to remove Microsoft Edge with this script, a failure message was printed in the terminal. My intention was to copy it in order to share it in this repository as part of another report originated by me. However, when a text is in focus in the terminal in which this script takes place, pressing ctrl with the intention of compiling either

  • ctrl + C or
  • ctrl + alt + C

causes the terminal to close, thus making content copying unsupported.

P.S. Copying in terminal is currently supported in genuine instances of PowerShell.

Consider adding Copilot removal to the default change list

This feature is so unwanted that I must disable it on every Windows 11 computer I service. However, doing this currently requires running the script in custom mode, which I would rather not do due to the possibility of irreversible borking of the system (i.e. unintended removal of that one Xbox app that cannot be restored because I mistakenly said YES).

More Bloat To Remove

Thank you for building and maintaining this wonderful script. I'm setting up some new Windows 11 machines for my family and have been astonished with just how much bloat Windows now has preinstalled. This script has already saved me HOURS of configuration so, again, bless you :)

I just wanted to bring to your attention that after doing a fresh install of Windows 11 and running your script I still have links to the following apps in the start menu under the "Pinned" heading:

  • Spotify
  • WhatsApp
  • LinkedIn
  • Outlook

I don't think these apps are actually installed by default, but the links (bloat) are put there by default. Was hoping maybe the script could be updated to remove these types of unwanted links along with all of the other bloat it removes.

Thanks again for the awesome script!

Explorer randomly crashes and does not show correctly USB drives

Hello,

I ran the script with these parameters : .\Win11Debloat.ps1 -RemoveApps -DisableBing -Silent -RemoveCommApps -RemoveW11Outlook -RemoveGamingApps -DisableTelemetry -HideDupliDrive -DisableWidgets -HideChat

Explorer crashed during the process, the system became irresponsive and really slow, then crashed (blue screen). At restart, everything seems fine, but the removable drives do not show properly (I've tried several) and any app such as Rufus or Balena that would look for these drives does not work (I see the process in the task manager, but the apps never pop up).

I ran the regedit to undi the -HideDupliDrive, but it doesn't seem to fix the issue.

Do you have any idea what's wrong now?

Thank you for your help!

Add option to disable OneDrive sync

First of all, thank God for people like you who make these scripts. I now have something to add to my Windows setup automation toolbox (which is annoying enough to use already, but that’s not your fault).

I am not certain if you have heard, but Microsoft has enshittified OneDrive via making it impossible to turn off Desktop and Documents folder sync, and have it stay off. The article I read (paywalled, unfortunately) says that there will be a Group Policy setting to handle this. I do not know what it is or if it has been released yet.

I just wanted to ensure that this is on your radar.

Interest in disabling "show more options"?

I moved from win 10 to win 11 and I really disliked the new folder explorer pane compared to the the old one.

The proposed change would permanently make it such that when you right click a file this pops up instead.

Would there be any interest in adding this command to the repo? Or would a fork be preferred?

reg add HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32 /ve /d "" /f

Calendar breaks - Which app removal does it?

Howdy,

Trying to figure out what breaks the calendar popup (clicking date/time in the system tray). I figured it would be Mail and Calendar but doesn't appear to be the case. Any ideas?

Need for target selection tools

Good morning. For those who have a pre-installed Windows OS - thus hundreds of millions of devices - and have no reason to use it, but have kept it for testing purposes and then installed to the system drive(s) at least one BSD/Linux OS, this script may look attractive. I tried it under Windows 11 v. 23H2.

Opting for the option 3 reveals many targets to select. In order to make the selection of targets efficient, the introduction of an Select all/Deselect all option as well as the supports of these key compilations

  • shift + pad/mouse-left-click
  • ctrl + pad/mouse-left-click

as they are in Windows Explorer, would be welcome.

Disable OneDrive's "Start back up" in File Explorer on Windows 11

This shows up on windows 11 in the file explorer path while browsing certain folders such as documents.
zJ8Kv

The responsible reg value is located here:
Path: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StorageProvider\OneDrive
Name: StorageProviderKnownFolderSyncInfoSourceFactory

And once overwritten with any value, this "feature" is immediately disabled. However, after a reboot (if one drive starts) it will enable it again.

I followed the instructions of this answer and set a deny permission for "set value" on the key and this worked like a charm.

Would be a nice feature to add to your awesome tool!

Add Option to disable Windows CoPilot

Your script is such a time saver! I really appreciate the work you've put into it and how easy it is to deploy en-mass. Microsoft CoPilot has made its way into some Win 11 deployments. It would be great to add an option to disable this as well.

From my research, the following reg key modification can control it:

Disable CoPilot:
reg add HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsCopilot /v TurnOffWindowsCopilot /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Enable CoPilot:
reg delete HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsCopilot /f

Outlook (New) not removed

Outlook (New) is not properly removed on Windows 11 23H2 Build 22621.3296
I used -RemoveW11Outlook switch
It seems the script did its job, but the pinned item in the Start Menu is still there so the user can click on it and it will install again.

Pinned Start Shortcuts

Thanks for the work you've done. I've found that there are a couple of pinned shortcuts that I'd like to see removed. Grammarly and Luminar Neo-AI Photo Editor. If I right click I can only unpin from start, so they are shortcuts and not installed apps. If I click on them, Windows takes me to the Windows Store. I've looked in all the locations I've read where Pinned items reside, but don't see them. Sorry I can't be of any further assistance in locating them. Thanks again.

3 more Apps for the remove list (imho)

Hi Raphire,

today i found 3 more Apps that could fit into the "should be removed" App-List:

  • devhome
  • Microsoft.YourPhone
  • Power Automate

Get-AppxPackage devhome -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.YourPhone -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppxPackage automate -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage

I was lazy and just hit this into the powershell.

Thank your for this awesome script :-)

Microsoft Sticky Notes

I would like to NOT have Microsoft Sticky Notes removed automatically. I added the # before the entry in the Appslist text file, but it is still removed whenever I run the app.

I would also like the option to HIDE the Windows Copilot instead of removing it completely, at least for now while it is in Beta mode. The problem is there is no standalone installer for Copilot so once it's gone the only way to get back is through a Microsoft Windows or Office Update currently.

Crash

Ran the Windows 11 debloat and it crashed my desktop and my bitdefender said it was a virus and made my screen black but my youtube video is still up playing. I cant access my desktop so i have to force restart the computer. Instead of debloating, it fucked windows os. Need to fix your exe file bruh.

Edge remove

Hi, is it possible to remove edge browser? I have run your script but edge is still here. I went through custom configuration and select it.
After success run, edge is still present.

Registry edits not working with domain PC

Greetings,

I've tried the script and used it to uninstall the bloatware and such. Though some changes aren't working in Windows 11.

I'm on a domain PC and running the script as the domain administrator or the local administrator (tried both).
The bloatware and start pins get removed and I'm free of bloatware.

However, changes such as the taskbar alignment or context menu options remain the same. Even when I manually execute the single registry file.

Support to delete some optional applications

We should have the possibility to delete optional applications like:

  • Microsoft.ZuneMusic because applications, such as VLC, are widely used and can replace it (and already replaced it for many people)
  • Microsoft.YourPhone
  • etc

Maybe a new flag -RemoveOptionalApps should be introduced to let users decide if they want to delete these apps or not.

Suppress prompts

Fantastic script, but ideally it needs an option like -Silent to suppress any interactive prompts so you can run it using deployment tools (e.g. PDQ)

I just deleted the line waiting for any key to be pressed on mine ;-)

Start Script from User with non Admin Rights?

Hi,

first, thanks for this nice script, i want to use it for our new windows 11 pro devices.

I build a .BAT and start my personal start.ps1-Script (this contains a lot of other stuff like create a user, join domain, install software with winget,...):

REM start.bat
powershell -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Command "Start-Process -Verb RunAs powershell -ArgumentList '-NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File \"%~dp0Starterscript\start.ps1"'

The script start.ps1 contain the following line:

...
#Das Script Win11Debloat stellt ein, dass die Taskbar Links angeordnet wird"
Start-Process powershell.exe "$PSScriptRoot\scripts\w11debloat\Win11Debloat.ps1 -TaskbarAlignLeft -Silent" -Wait -NoNewWindow
...

When I run the Bat-File with my local Admin Account, everthing works fine, the explorer close, restart and the taskbar is allign on the left site.

When I Run the Bat-File with a User-Account, the BAT ask me for my Admin-Account, then the script Win11Debloat.ps1 starts, the explorer killed by the sriptt, and then nothing happens. When I start the task explorer over the taskmanager, the Taskbar is still allign central.

grafik

Can you help me, how I must start the script Win11Debloat.ps1 from my sript start.ps1 correctly?

Thank you!
Marco

Support of audit environment

Hi Raphine,

very nice work your script. I've used it on 3 or 4 different new installation of windows 11 to create an image with sysprep. It seems that it works well removing unuseful ms store app, but it loses personalization of interface (position of start button, combining of button in the taskbar). Did you try to use it in audit mode?

remove the baked in 365 apps

Hello,

As others have said, thank you for this wonderful tool.

Can we add the ability to remove the baked-in office 365 / 365 one-note app + all sub-languages, as an option?

thanks!

Not removing every package

Hi, your script's great, except that it doesn't delete a package the running user itself hasn't installed.
I found that instead of

#Get-AppxPackage -Name $app -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage

the following line

Get-ProvisionedAppxPackage -Online | Where-Object { $.PackageName -match $app } | ForEach-Object { Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage -Online -AllUsers -PackageName $.PackageName }

does this job much better? Keep up your good work. Thanks again!
Martin.
