I think the docs it's outdated, you need to override or implement the execution middleware.

Hey yeah, sorry that part was super outdated. I hope 7b73ed2 is a bit more clear.
Feel free to send a PR expanding on this. The documentation for the concept of "execution middleware" is… non-existent :/
