remotes's Introduction

Introduction

This is a repository listing companies which offer full-time remote jobs with Spanish contracts

Why

When considering a remote job, it's natural to think that you can work for any company in the world. However, if you live in Spain, working for companies abroad means becoming self-employed, which has several drawbacks:

  • Your employer can end your contract at any time
  • You need to do extra paperwork compared to a regular full-time job
  • There is no clear legal framework. Apparently it is not OK to be self-employed and work for a single Spanish company. There seems to be no clear messaging from the government that doing the same for a foreign company is OK

There is a significant amount of resources to find a remote job, but we have found none targeting people living in Spain. As we believe that the number of companies allowing remote work in Spain are limited, a list seems a good approach for those seeking a remote work; they can simply go through the list and look for open positions.

Conditions

Remote

We will only list companies which allow working fully remotely (e.g. you can work from anywhere in Spain and you do not have to set foot in an office if you don't want to). Some occasional travelling for onboarding, team building or similar purposes is fine. Also the companies must also hire people using Spanish full-time contracts (i.e. not self-employment). For example, the following scenarios are OK:

  • A completely Spanish company that hires in Spain with regular, non self-employed contracts people living in Spain
  • A foreign company, with a Spanish legal entity to be able to hire people living in Spain, using regular, non self-employed contracts
  • A foreign company, using an intermediary to hire people living in Spain, but the contract must also be Spanish, not requiring self-employment.

Offers

Please provide a stable URL which lists all offers that meet the conditions for being listed in this page (or a simple way to filter/locate them).

We recommend:

  • Not using an URL or page that seems to be for a specific offer (e.g. /blog/backend_python_dev). People browsing the list might not feel confident that the offer is still available and up to date
  • Showing clearly when offers were posted
  • Highlight clearly which offers fulfill the criteria for this listing or that all offers do. For instance, indicate clearly which offers are remote, etc.

Adding a company

If you are a company or an individual, send a PR which adds the company to the list (in alphabetical order). Try to be brief to keep the list manageable.

The GitHub "edit file" button automates the process of forking and submitting a PR.

Please make a note in the offer if:

  • You have specific travel requirements (monthly onsites, etc.) which happen more than 3 times a year
  • You require language knowledge other than Spanish and/or medium English

or anything you feel might be important to users of the list, especially if this is not clearly stated in the offers in your listings.

Tag your offer with:

  • (All offers are remote) if the job listing does not offer any indication that all offers are remote, nor marks clearly remote offers, but all jobs are remote.
  • (All technical offers are remote) if the job listing does not offer any indication that all offers are remote, nor marks clearly remote offers, but all technical offers are remote.
  • (View individual job offers to check for remote) if the job listing does not offer any indication that all offers are remote, nor marks clearly remote offers, so you need to check individual offers to see if the position is remote.
  • (Async friendly)/(Async first) if you do not have specific availability requirements. This is especially interesting for workers who might be interested in working on a different schedule or timezone. You can also add details like (Preferred overlap of 3 hours with US Eastern office hours), (Night shift every 4 weeks), (4 day week), or (Requires availability 8-9 Europe/Madrid).

Support

It is our objective for this list to remain useful and effective for job searchers. If you use this list and notice that a company listed below is no longer useful (broken URL, not clearly listing remote offers which fulfill the criteria for the listing, etc.), please send a PR removing it (along with a justification) or open an issue.

See OWNERS for details about the maintenance of the project

Companies

The following companies offer remote jobs and hire in Spain:

Others

The following links might be useful if you are looking for a remote position in Spain.

  • JobFluent Open positions JobFluent is a Spanish job search site that allows filtering for 100% remote positions and only listing companies with offices in Spain.
  • Manfred Open positions Manfred is a recruiting company. Offers marked as FULL REMOTE and with a salary in euro comply with the conditions stated above.
  • Remote First Open positions Remote First is a Spanish remote job search site that allows filtering for offers complying with the conditions stated above.
  • Rviewer Open positions Rviewer is an IT hiring marketplace that allows filtering full-remote and hybrid positions in Spain and Europe.
  • Barcelona Engineering Open positions Barcelona Engineering (BcnEng) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to let Barcelona’s tech hub become one of the best tech communities around the globe. Their #hiring-job-board Slack channel is an automated channel where people and companies post job offers. Those with the Remote tag are truly remote, however some offers might be for freelancers/contractors.

The following sites list remote jobs. Some offers list explicitly Spain, which likely mean hiring with permanent contracts in Spain. However, offers that do not show a location, or that list many countries, are likely freelancing roles.

Consider adding "sync/async" information to the companies listing

On the BcnEng Slack, someone was asking about companies that hire on Spain, but are async enough so you could work as a digital nomad from a different country sporadically. Adding this information to the company listing would help people in this situation.

I feel making this information "mandatory" would be impractical- it would make vetting companies considerably harder, but surely we could request people to opt in to adding tags like "completely async", "UTC-2 - UTC+6 mandatory", etc.

Investigate YouGov

A personal acquaintance has been hired there, and he confirms he has a Spanish full-time employee contract, but their job listing is unclear on which positions are suitable for that.

Find a third owner

One of our three maintainers is retiring, so we have two maintainers now. I like having three people; two is probably a sufficient bus factor, but three means "ties" are easier to break. So I think we should do a call for volunteers. The first time I did this I put no effort and it worked pretty well, but maybe we can do better.

I have drafted #94 as a rationale, and also as "instructions" and guidelines that include the very process of selecting owners.

As a call to action, I propose the following message to be published in places like the BcnEng Slack (Spanish might seem inconsistent because the whole repo is in English, but I think it makes sense because I assume most places this will be published on will be Spanish-speaking).

(this is an incomplete draft until @uesteibar agrees.)

Investigate levels.fyi

A member of BcnEng proposes we add:

https://www.levels.fyi/jobs/location/spain?workArrangements=remote

to the "others" section. Actually, this job site looks very good and I think a lot of jobs with that filter meet the requirements of this list.

I think the offers such as this one:

imagen

, which list only locations in Spain, are likely to be "good". However, I fear that offers like:

imagen

may not be- frequently companies hiring in multiple companies require "foreign" employees to be contractors/freelancers.

In other cases, we have contacted the site and asked them for details. For example, #102 I just received an answer which is likely negative (I'll update the ticket in the meantime).

Pinging the person who reported this, so this person can weigh in. I wouldn't be opposed to adding this URL to the "others" section if we added a note that conveys "we think offers listing only locations in Spain might be appropriate, but other offers are likely to not be good" adequately. If the original reporter wants to contact levels.fyi, I'm all for it- if not I can contact them myself.

Promote the repo

To gain critical mass, we should link the repo on appropriate places. List them under this ticket to avoid repeating spam

200 companies milestone! (was 100...)

Someone noted we've reached 100 companies listed ( #11 (comment) ), including Manfred.

I've done a quick review of the listing and I haven't found many broken links (some were outdated, but I managed to find updated URLs easily: 269d0d3 )- I need to check two companies that have been acquired to get some clarification on them, see #53 .

However, at some point maybe we should re-consider our current format. It might be a bit uncomfortable to open 100 links (although I just did that for the review). From the last time we discussed that, more than a year ago, GitHub has added GitHub Discussions, which might be a way to handle job postings.

Thoughts @acroca @uesteibar ? I think this might be worth thinking about- I don't think any next step would be easy, so maybe we want to stay as-is for a while more? Perhaps it's worth reaching out to some communities for discussion (BcnEng?)...

I'm taking this easy for now, so I'll just ping you and see if you guys have any input.

Refer a job posting service?

Just a thought.

I'm seeing a lot of companies posting job offers on static pages and weird stuff, which makes it bad for publishing here. I'm suspecting that many companies do so because they are tight on budget to publish job offers, use Bamboo or similar products, etc.

I think it would be good if we could point those companies to some place they could post those offers free of charge... in a way that works well with us. Either a place which would only publish offers matching our criteria or which would allow filtering.

Last resort would be to operate a mailing list. I'm happy to do that, but I'd rather look into something which already exists...

Group by technologies

I'd would be great if you ask for the technologies required for each position. It will be easier to search and will avoid people to open each link.

Instead of a list it could be a table with some extra information like technologies, salary range, etc.

You can even automate this once #138 is ready.

Review

  • reply.ai: was acquired by Kustomer, new offers in Spain unclear, checking with a contact
  • Pagantis: was renamed to Clearpay, offers unclear. Contacted with a job poster on BcnEng. Updated: 4c1bec4

Maybe Delete

Crealsa out maybe, 404 page and not exist on LinkedIn

Datadog requires you to be close to an office

Hi,

One of the requirements you make is to

We will only list companies which allow working fully remotely (e.g. you can work from anywhere in Spain and you do not have to set foot in an office if you don't want to)

However this is what I got from a Datadog recruiter recently:

we are focusing on hiring in tech hub locations (meaning either Paris, Madrid or Lisbon)

So, based on that, I don't think Datadogs meets the criteria.

Thanks for the initiative!

Verify companies

I applied to the following companies during my previous job search, but I'm not 100% sure they offer Spanish contracts. It'd be nice to review and add them if applicable.

Some of them might be consulting companies, offer only self-employment, not offer Spanish contracts or don't offer remote. If you know they don't apply, please comment and I'll remove.

If you are sure they offer remote and a Spanish contract, comment and I'll add them to the list (or send a PR yourself and comment here so I remove them from the issue).
