Somethimes the read() that waits the server response blocks indefinetely.
Try with a 100 ms delay right after Serial.settimer in the read response function. That gives some time to the timer to be set.
OR put a delay of 1 second, then read(). If there is not a value return 0 that invocates the default behaviour.

Add the snooze phase with early break if the user goes away early
