My bad, didn't realize using npm install --save koa-passport was installing for Koa 1, was mis-lead because master branch is for Koa2 so I thought that was default
After re-reading realized I needed koa-passport@next thanks.

What would have prevented this misleading? A simple npm install koa-passport@next in the Readme?

@rkusa Yes just put in the README something like
For use with Koa2 run npm install --save koa-passport@next
For use with Koa1 run npm install --save koa-passport
