wrong character used for both LF and CRLF

I've used the extension on VS 2022 for years without issue, but I just installed it on a new Windows install (also VS 2022) and the characters render badly: LF looks like a pair of glasses, and CRLF looks like a mouse:

I suppose this could be a font or encoding issue? any ideas how to fix it?

'Enable Line Ending' false ignored a startup for open windows

I have set 'Enable Line Ending' to false.

When closing and restarting Visual Studio some (sometimes all) automatically reopened windows are displayed with visual line endings.
When closing and reopening these windows the line endings disappear.
