thredd's Issues

Fix wording of various buttons/windows

<USER> started a discussion about this URL is confusing b/c it doesn't sound useful from the client's perspective. They don't care about who started the discussion, they want to know why it's relevant.
(change to: Great news! The entire post is about <URL>!)

Go To Reddit reads too much like a call to action which is why some people accidentally click on it. Change this to just Reddit

The comments button is the real call to action so change it to a verb like Open X Comments or something like that.

"I forget that I have Thredd installed"

Very common comment that people unfamiliar with browser extensions make about Thredd.

Mom suggested making the red badge flash for a second or two when Thredd finds results so it will be more noticeable without being too obtrusive.

Subreddit hover tooltip gets cut off

From u/iVarun's comment:

When extension is clicked and results showing, Mouse over onto Subreddit name brings up the Min-dialog box of that sub and at that stage, quickly removing the mouse hover away from extension space onto normal webpage leaves/cuts-off the that Mini-dialog box of the sub like a visual cutout on that individual result-hit.

"Why did Thredd return this result?"

Proposed feature: differentiating between link post, in the post body, and comment

  • Link post - “Discussion about <URL>
  • Body of post - “Mentioned in <Title of Post>
  • Comment (possible options):
    • Just show some of the comment
    • “Comment in <Title of Post>
    • “Reply to <Parent comment>
    • Will also probably need to scroll to the relevant comment

OR

Hovering over post will show tooltip that contains the selftext / comment text / "discussion about URL" text

  • X to close tooltip
  • do not open immediately; delay a couple seconds
  • click to find comment / selftext / just open
  • Pros: no limit on comment size

It looks like Thredd is not blacklisting a site if it was blacklisted recently

If the user visits a page before the domain is blacklisted then Thredd will have results for that page. Afterwards if the user blacklists the domain and goes back to the original page, Thredd will show a badge saying Thredd has results. These results were from the first time the user visited the page but the expected behavior is that Thredd should say it's not running.

Feature idea: share thredd results as standalone webpage

Inspired by onetab's "share as a webpage" feature, imagine a new button in the menu bar that would allow thredd users to share the thredd results for a particular website with another user that might not have thredd installed (yet).

e.g. scenario

STEP 1: user A visits page X, sees interesting discussions in the thredd sidebar, and clicks the "Share as webpage" button
thredd idea

STEP 2: user gets redirected to a standalone web URL that contains the same results as in the sidebar, but accessible to anyone on the web without installing thredd.

STEP 3: user A shares the web URL for the results with user B "Hi B, check out the discussions I found on reddit bout site X"

STEP 4: user B checks the web URL and enjoys the "reddit research" that user A provided them with without the need to install anything

STEP 5: user B finds the "this page was powered by thredd" in the web URL footer and goes on to install thredd broswer extension and becomes a user
