Tesla Public Issue Tracker

This repo is to track issues (bugs and especially feature requests) for Tesla vehicles that I (@rpwoodbu) would like to see implemented. I'm happy to discuss these with the public, and others are free to submit their own issues, but I will curate them using my own judgment and sensibilities. If you are looking for a public forum, there are lots of other places online for that.

Issues tracked here are likely to be biased in several ways:

  • Features known to be coming may not be listed.
  • Features that are "I want a pony" are not listed.
  • Low-effort features and bugs are preferred. Search for the "effort: easy" label for low-hanging fruit.

I currently own a Tesla Model S 75D with Autopilot 2.5, so there will be a significant bias toward that model (although I believe most issues will apply to all).

tesla's Issues

Do not use thumbwheel to adjust nav volume

I consider it a bug that the thumbwheel can adjust the nav volume while the navigation system is speaking. My initial reaction when I can't hear the navigation is to turn down the media playback, which actually just turns down the navigation I already can't hear!

Perhaps the root issue is that the system doesn't mute all the speakers when the nav is talking, like it does when there are Autopilot chimes. I'd rather not have to fiddle with the volume at all.

Allow more than just "home" and "work" quick-access destinations

In the current navigational system, you can set both a "home" and a "work" location for quick access. But it is very common to have another location that you visit on a daily basis, such as a school or carpool pickup/dropoff. It would be nice to make space for one or two more quick-access locations, and even allow their names to be customized.

Keep dome lights on much longer while door is open

When the dome lights are set to "auto", they illuminate when the door is open. But they turn off after 60 seconds, even while the door is still open (this is even mentioned in the manual). It isn't clear to me why the timeout is so short. Five minutes is likely a more sensible minimum timeout.

It can easily take in excess of 60 seconds to situate a child into a car seat, particularly an uncooperative child. The light turning off distracts the adult and the child, losing precious ground in the endeavor.

Alternative implementation: Automate the insertion of child into car seat.

Thumbwheels on steering wheel don't always respond

There seems to be a minimum speed at which you can turn the thumbwheel controls on the steering wheel for the intent to be recognized. I often want to make a one-step adjustment in speed or temperature, but it is tricky to get it to take without overshooting it due to the speed required.

It is unclear if this is a hardware or software issue.

Also unlock car when engaging keyless driving

When engaging keyless driving on my phone, it isn't clear to me why I have to unlock the car as a separate action (which requires two taps because of the "are you sure" dialog). Is it actually useful to engage keyless driving without also unlocking the car?

Do not unfold mirrors until driver inside vehicle

When auto-fold side mirrors is enabled, the mirrors will fold up when the car is locked, and unfold again when the car is unlocked. If auto-unlock is enabled, the car will unlock as soon as you approach it with the key fob. It usually does this just as I'm about to walk past the side mirror (Teslas are commonly parked tail-in for charging), up against another car with its side mirror also protruding into my path. It's like the car is trolling me.

There's no need for the mirror to unfold while I'm outside the car. The mirrors should wait to unfold until the driver is in the seat and shuts the door.

Keep accessories on while passengers still in car

In my experience, it is common for the driver to exit the car and close the door before passengers have opened their doors. This causes accessories (media, HVAC) to turn off until another door is opened. This is jarring for these passengers.

Times when this happens:

  • When getting child situated into or out of car seat.
  • When driver uses Summon to enter/exit the car, but some passengers are still/already in the car.

Possible implementation: Leave accessories on until vehicle locks, or until a suitable timeout.

Enable brake hold when disengaging autopilot while fully stopped

I often use Autopilot (or at least TACC) to bring the car to a complete stop at a stop light[0]. But if I am going to make a turn, I don't want Autopilot engaged any further. But simply turning it off once I'm stopped by pushing on the stalk will cause the car to roll. The car should engage the brake hold when it is fully stopped and Autopilot is disengaged. The car will do this if you hit the brake pedal to disengage Autopilot while stopped; for consistency's sake at least, it should do the same with the stalk.

[0]: Of course, this is behind stopped traffic, as it doesn't see stop lights. And I do find myself toggling Autopilot to avoid it coming to a screeching halt behind cars, but I do turn it on once it sees the stopped traffic, so it can smoothly bring the car to a stop.

Allow reordering of "favorite" destinations

The current navigational system allows starring destinations to add them to the "favorites" list. But the list shows the most recently added favorite at the top. There is no first-class way to change this ordering. The only workaround is to unfavorite something and put it back, pushing it to the top. This is crude at best.

Possible implementation: Draw a handle next to each element in the favorites list, and allow the user to drag it up and down.

Support multi-stop routing

The navigational system only supports routing to one destination at a time. It can therefore only calculate battery drain for one route. Allowing multiple stops to be specified will allow it to help the driver determine if the day's plans can be achieved without charging.
