About me

I'm a guy that writes code. Whether anybody uses it or not doesn't really matter.

This README

The SVG used at the top of this README is based on the version I use on my personal website. It's done in pure SVG using SMIL to control the animation. Each "wave" has a list of variations that it cycles between, and each one's animation cycle is offset slightly so they aren't all stopping/starting at the same time. Waves themselves are generated using a variation on the midpoint displacement algorithm, where new control points are added halfway between existing ones. Each iteration of the algorithm also reduces how much each control point contributes to the overall height.

howtoscreenshot's Issues

Detection of platform with JavaScript

I know you want to ensure that it doesn't require JavaScript, but would it be ok if there was a script that tries to guess at what platform the user is on, and then displays some text saying "We think that you are using a __ device" at the top, and with the platform in question highlighted slightly, to prompt users who don't know what type of device they have. If the user doesn't have JavaScript, it will fail silently.

This would be especially useful, as some users in my experience don't know that iPads run iOS for example.

If you are happy for the project to have a little bit of JavaScript, I can have a go at it, or you can see at https://stackoverflow.com/questions/9514179/how-to-find-the-operating-system-details-using-javascript how it can be done fairly accurately.

Windows: Windows, Shift and S

Does not save the screenshots to a folder in My Pictures. Only puts it in the clipboard.

Some Windows refinements are needed

Hello! I linked your site in a Reddit comment and got some feedback from /u/Charlie7Mason here, which I'd like to "forward" to you.

  • Win + PrtSc does not mention that it also saves the screenshot as a file to C:\Users\YourUserName\Pictures\Screenshots

  • Game bar shortcut does not mention Win + Alt + PrtSc, which saves the screenshot as a file to C:\Users\YourUserName\Videos\Captures

It would be great if you could add these.

Limited Linux Instructions

Plopping this down to remind myself later, but the linux instructions are missing screenshot tools like flameshot. Might be useful for anyone who finds themselves in a DE without builtin screenshotting or with a keyboard without PrnScr.

Android guide isn't necessarily correct

Some Android devices are only quick press and release of the volume down and power buttons (same as iOS), rather than hold. This is most notable on (unsurprisingly) Samsung devices, which are one of the biggest shares in the market.

If you hold on such devices, it brings up the power menu.

Steam deck

Steam deck instructions are not on the site.

More iPhones than the iPhone X have no home button

On the iOS page it says that for iPhone X users the procedure is different as it has no home button. Most of the current iPhones have no home button - would it make more sense to switch the order? Or perhaps just to remove reference to the iPhone X as there are many iPhones now with no home button.
