CoffeeJS September

Let's plan another CoffeeJS! I'll be busy the weekend of the 8th and 15th so I was thinking maybe the 22nd/23rd? Although, that might be a little too close to our regular meetup.

Possible locations

  1. Naked Lounge, 11th and H
  2. Temple, 28th and S (large outside area)

NomadJS Movie Night

@jakerella from NomadJS has offered us rights to show a NomadJS video at one of our meetups:

Hi Derek!

We were wondering if SacJS wanted to use one of the NomadJS videos as the main talk for one of your meetings. We'd give you the rights to show the video to the group at no cost, we'd just slap a logo on the video and maybe redo the intro to be more generic for you.

I was thinking either John K Paul's talk on ES6 (https://nomadjavascript.com/product/es6-right-now/) or Margaret Leibovic's talk on async workflows with generators (https://nomadjavascript.com/product/asynchronous-js-with-yield/).

Let me know what you think!

--Jordan

I am definitely interested in doing this as a Movie Night 🎥 at The Hive.

At this point, its just a matter of scheduling. We've got quite a few speakers in the bank so I'm not entirely sure at this point where to slot it in. We'd likely know more after our May meetup how things will start looking into June.

@jakerella out of curiosity, were you looking at doing this as a gift to local user groups, or was there a time-sensitive advertising component to your offering? If you are trying to create buzz to increase NomadJS memberships, then that will guide how we'd schedule this (sooner rather than later). If there is no rush, then we can take a more considered approach to planning and execution. Either way, looking forward to this! 👍

Memory Leaks in JS Apps

Estimated Length: 20 mins.

Topics:

  • What is a memory leak?
    • Memory and V8 (chrome/node.js)
    • Why does it happen?
    • Where does it happen? (closures, et. al.)
  • Identify Leaks
    • Using observation
    • Using tools
  • Fixing memory leaks
    • As they are spotted
    • Before they happen (best practices/patterns)

This presentation is a work in progress and doesn't dive terribly deep, think of it as more of an awareness campaign. 😄

Bryan && Raquel && (NPM || Community || Robots || Infinity)

Dear @rockbot && @bryan-m-hughes,

We at SacJS would like to formally invite you to speak at one of our monthly meetups. We are still a new community group and many of our members seem to be relatively new to Javascript (though we have some overachievers) and certainly new to speaking. We were wondering if you would like to come talk to our members about... really anything.

Given both of your backgrounds, here are some starter ideas:

  • NPM (how to package manage)
  • Server-side JS basics
  • NodeBots
  • The Javascript community from local meetups (ManhattanJS, JS.LA, etc.), through smaller events (NodeBots, JSFest, ThunderplainsConf), and up to JSConf or FluentConf
  • Speaking! (We've had no volunteers 😢)
  • Anything!

I've asked you both either in person or via the Internet, and you've both been agreeable to the idea. So this serves as an (overly formal 😉) way to kick off planning. We have openings as early as March, though a specific date has not yet been locked in. We'd like to shoot for an hour of talks (2 30min, 3 20min, etc.), so if you have any friends you'd like to bring with you, please do!

So what say you? 🙏

-- ❤️ Sacramento

TBD?

I've convinced Google engineer and JSConf EU organizer Malte Ubl to come talk. Details TBD.

Alex Russell, Google Chrome/Dev Relations

At TXJS, @slightlyoff volunteered to come talk at a future meetup. Given his understandably busy schedule, the best we could come up with was November 24th.

After looking at the calendar, we might want to push that back even further since that is only 2 days before Thanksgiving. In fact, I might not even be in town for that meetup. If we decide to move it back, our calendar is pretty clear for any future Fourth Tuesday:

  • February 23
  • March 22
  • April 26
  • May 24
  • June 28
  • July 26

Alternatively, I can check with our venue and see about maybe moving our meetup to an earlier Tuesday. @slightlyoff, if there is a particular Tuesday that works best for you, that will help us coordinate with our venue.

Thanks again for offering to come speak! We're looking forward to it!

Derek asked if I would be available to talk about my experiences with the data and D3. Absolutely, but it would help me to know:

How long to expect to talk
What format it should be (presentation with slides, informal chat, go through code...?)
Anything in particular anyone would like to hear about D3 and data visualization.

React Workshop with Steven Luscher (Instagram)

Date: Saturday, July 18th
Time: 9:00am - 5:00pm
Location: UC Davis Extension, Room 200
Tickets: https://ti.to/sacjs/reactjs-workshop

Overview

At JSConf, I talked to Tom Occhino from Facebook about getting us in touch with someone that coulf run a React Workshop here in Sacramento. He got me in touch with Steven Luscher from the Instagram Web Team. He teaches React to new hires at Facebook. He has offered to run a modified version of a workshop that he delivered in Vancouver at the Polyglot conference. That workshop was 8-hours long, so we might alter the time commitment based on user feedback.

This workshop would be in lieu of our normal Tuesday meetup because I am not a robot and won't have time to book speakers for two events 😄

Agenda

Pre-workshop
  • If libs need to be pre-installed (npm, node, etc.), communicate to attendees
Day Before
  • Ensure Steven arrived OK

He says he will be coming in late

  • Get cooler prepped

  • Costco Run for beverages w/ @samt (#34)

8:00am - Day of Preparation
  • Get ice
  • Setup room
  • Receive breakfast delivery from Noah's Bagels (#34)
  • Setup breakfast
  • Setup refreshments for the day
9:00am - Check-in
  • Handle check-in/registration
  • If libs need to be pre-installed (npm, node, etc.), make sure attendees have that working
  • Swag?
    • I have tons of React stickers, a good number of Facebook stickets, and some Instagram stickers
    • Maybe Steven can bring some Facebook tshirts, etc up with him
10:00am - Start
  • Welcome guests
  • CoC
  • Introduce Steven
10:05am Workshop
  • Do the thing
11:20am - Prep Lunch
  • Drive to Chipotle to pick up order (@samt [has Order #] and @a-axton)

    1831 Capitol Ave
    Sacramento, CA 95814

  • Setup lunch

Unpack, arrange chafing dishes, add water to pan, light pan fuel, etc.

12:00pm - Catered Lunch
  • Eat the Chipotle
12:45pm - Workshop
  • Do the thing
2:45pm - Break
  • Snacks?
3:00pm - Workshop
  • Do the thing
4:00pm - Closing
  • Q&A?
  • Thank Steven
  • Thank sponsors
Post-workshop
  • Optional staff/attendee dinner/BeerJS
  • Drop off Steven at the train station in time for the 9:10pm train

Tasks

  • Find a venue

    UC Davis Extension
    Sutter Square Galleria Center
    2901 K St
    Sacramento, CA 95816
    Room 200

  • Find a time

    9am - 5pm

  • Find sponsor for lodging

Since Steven will be traveling 4-hours in one direction, he asked if someone would be willing to host him overnight. I think we can go one step further and get him a hotel room near the train station. I'm hoping that we can get that covered via a sponsorship. Worst case, I'll pay out of pocket.

Facebook will be covering Steven's lodging expenses

  • Find sponsor for food and beverages

We have sponsorship money coming in from Autodesk and possibly more from Stone Cobra and TEKSystems if needed. Still awaiting confirmation.

Barring any surprises, the Autodesk money should cover the entire event

  • Find support staff

Anyone we know that is proficient in React is welcome to act as staff for this event. At the very least, I'd like to have the following on hand:

  • Determine if a fee is necessary

Since this will be the most logistically challenging event we've put on, I'd like to explore the idea of selling tickets for at least a $5 non-refundable fee. Since ticket purchasers will have some skin in the game, it will help deter no-shows. In addition, the fee can help offset any expenses we incur. Any profits would go to an as yet unnamed local STEM-like organization.

We will be charging $10 per ticket with a 50%-off discount for the first 5 registrants at the June 23rd Meetup (#30). This will be handled by a Tito account that I have setup.

Book Release Party Ideas

So... what does one do at a book release party? 😊

Ideas:

  • Both Chris and Eva give a talk. 20 - 30mins?
  • Food and beverages. Maybe we can get someone to sponsor? The publisher?
  • "Cocktail" hour before or after? Would be a good way to mingle and get to know people
  • 💲💲💲
  • Profit

If we are calling this a party, we should think of something fun/festive. 🎉

Polite request to merge SacJS with Sac SPA

Hello there! I am writing to inquire if you, the maintainers of SacJS, would like to merge with the Sacramento Single Page Apps group. I am new to the area and haven't seen much as far as activity in the SacJS group. I have, however, been to one Sac SPA group and the attendees seemed eager to attend more.

Since SacJS has the better branding as far as local North American JS user groups go, I was wondering if you'd like to share ownership of the SacJS name and repo so that the two groups can merge and enjoy the benefits of the well branded "SacJS" name.

If this request sounds familiar, it is likely because I tweeted you some time ago.

If it helps sway your decision, I am a helper monkey within the JSConf organization handling all things sponsorship related. I am also looking to start some beer.js events in the Sac area, but wanted to use the SacJS brand to do so.

To be clear, I have no desire in wrestling ownership away from you. I would just like to share with you in all things SacJS so that we can create a lively local Sacramento based Javascript community. Its hard creating something like that alone, so I'd like to extend an offer to help!

Thank for you your time!

Functional Programming in JavaScript

We talked a bit last night about my doing a talk on using functional programming techniques in JS.

I would be interested in doing this if other people are interested.

I would want to talk about some combination of the following, depending on interest:

  • What is FP and why we should care
  • Function purity and side effects
  • First class functions & lambdas
  • Currying and partial application
  • Lists and list processing (map, filter, folds, etc.)
  • Higher order functions and function composition
  • Lazy evaluation
  • Tools and libraries

I would give real world examples and keep it practical, focusing on how these techniques can make our lives easier as programmers.

Sequelize with NodeJS

@dlindahl is there anyone in the group who has any experience with Sequelize? I am having some issues using Class Associations and was hoping I could pick someones brain.

Property based testing

Per: https://twitter.com/sac_js/status/629009116946661376

I'd like to present a talk about property based testing (PBT), where the idea is to test generalized properties or laws about a program, rather than specific instances.

Depending on how much time, I'd like to touch on:

  • What is testing?
  • Why is it important?
  • Things testing cannot do.
  • Drawbacks of example based testing.
  • History of PBT.
  • Benefits of PBT.
  • How to use PBT in JS.
  • Simple example.
  • Intermediate/real-world example.
  • Advanced example.

How does that sound?

Facebook Authentication on a Node REST API

I was hoping to get a little direction on which route I should take on an app I am building using Ionic on the client side and Node+Postgres on the back. The app Users will only be Facebook users. And I would like to make all the calls back to Node RESTful to GET/POST JSON data.

I understand you can login into Facebook from the client side and get the FB access token which in turn you can pass back to your server or you can have the client side hit a URL on your server which proxies the FB request and gets the FB token. Is there a benefit of going one way or another? Is one easier? If I understand the point of a true REST API that is to be stateless I would think this token would need to get passed back or forth between each GET/POST?

And during testing I ran into some CORS issues with the latter approach that I thought I followed the tweaks I needed but still got me some 302's.

Please help.

TBDFest Project Obelisk

Project Obelisk is an interactive LED art installation that we (Rocket Dept.) brought to TBDfest this year. The LED animation logic is all powered by Javascript (react, threejs, web audio api). This talk is going to be a combination of outlining the problems I faced trying to write code for a physical project that didn't exist yet (the problem), showcasing live example (the solution), and finally a primer on the technology used in my solution.

I'll probably won't be using react for the examples since that isn't really relevant to everyone. However, I'll have a link to a git repo with all of the Obelisk code for those interested. I'll also have a repo up for the example code I'm using.

Topics

  • Intro to Project Obelisk w/ photos
  • Outline the problem and why I decided on outcome
  • Live demo time
  • Quick run-through of the code being used and how it works
  • 15 min intro to three.js
    • what is it?
    • building a basic scene
    • adding basic shapes
  • 15 min intro to web audio api (based around the audio analyzer)
    • what is it?
    • data types (waveform, levels, bpm?)
    • code examples + explanation
  • Putting them together to make magic

Rusty Node

Systems programming is scary! You can crash your server, create memory leaks, loose important data and a myriad of other bad things can happen if us high level programmers decided to start writing C code. This is the main barrier of entry into this domain. What if you could write code that gave you the power and speed of low level code while keeping you from many of the pitfalls that make low level code unsafe? Well that is Rust my friend!

The Rust programming language is built in a way that the code will not compile unless it safe. So with that worry out of the way now high level programmers, like javascript developers, can dip their feet into the systems programming world and see how the water feels.

Why would you want to use Rust?
For staters it has the ability to be really fast. From benchmarksgame it is about 50 times faster than PHP, Ruby and Python and around 10 times faster then V8. It is about 1.5 times slower than C which is super fast.
http://benchmarksgame.alioth.debian.org/u64q/which-programs-are-fastest.html

Second it also has the ability to have a very small memory footprint. Rust compiles down to a binary executable which is automatically optimized to be low memory. The language also has no garbage collection process so again saves memory. Along with being low memory out of the gates the language has a lot of tooling that allows for low level optimizations much like C or C++.

So that probably all sounds cool but as a JavaScript developer, how are you supposed to use it? Well, Node.js actually has a foreign function interface (FFI) which allows you to run Rust processes directly from node. Its that simple. Let's start using Rust!

Raquel Velez "GO HOME/OUTSIDE" &&|| Ashley Williams (TBD)

From https://twitter.com/rockbot/status/664141229139955712

Hey @rockbot and @ashleygwilliams, we'd like to extend an open invite to you both to come up to Sactown and teach us some cool stuff!

  • Our Meetup Page
  • We meet every 4th Tuesday at The Urban Hive
  • Meetups typically start at 7pm
  • We usually do one 45-minute talk, two 30-minute talks, or three 20-minute talks. But we're flexible. Go long, go short, bring a friend! Its all 💯
  • Talks followed by open-ended socializing time
  • SF to SAC is ~1.5hrs by car, ~2hrs by Amtrak (free wifi!) (I can pick-up/drop-off & the last train leaves at 9:30pm so there would be a time cap on the evening)
  • Nov/Dec is bad for us due to holiday schedules, but we're wide open starting in January (which is our first birthday! 🎂🎉)

Let us know if you have any other questions!

VR Evangelist @ Microsoft, Liv Erickson

I pinged @misslivirose about the possibility of coming to Sacramento and talking to us about VR, WebVR, the Web, Microsoft and/or anything else she wanted to talk about and she agreed! This will serve as the official thread to discuss logistics, etc.

We meet at The Urban Hive on the 4th Tuesday of every month at 7pm. We try to plan for three 20-min, two 30-min, or one 45-min presentation depending on how many other speakers we have.

As of right now, I think our July 28th meetup would be best, but I might want to move you up to our June 23rd meetup if our current plans fall through. Do those dates work for you? Got any questions for us?

Thanks Liv!

Intro to NodeJS

@jeffprandall reached out to me via Meetup to let me know that @CrabDude was interested in coming up from Mountain View to a meetup to give a talk, possibly about NodeJS. This issue is about moving the conversation here and coordinating the details.

Adam, I understand you are likely unavailable for our April meetup and, as of now, our May meetup is booked up by a Book Release Party. Are you available in June?

You don’t need JavaScript for that!

We have been using JavaScript toolkits like jQuery for nearly a decade to make manipulating the DOM easier as we create our highly-interactive web apps. New features in HTML5 & CSS3 should’ve made old development strategies obsolete, and yet we’re still using jQuery to do things better suited for HTML5 & CSS3. Why? Well, old habits die hard.

In this session, let’s look at ways we used to build interactivity in JavaScript and see how we can transform them into more optimal solutions using plain old HTML and CSS. We’ll discuss CSS3 transitions & animations, new HTML5 attributes, and other “tricks” to offload JavaScript functionality to the browser’s rendering engine for more performant web applications. Whether you’re a seasoned JavaScripter or just getting started, you’ll leave the session with fresh ideas to work with.

Estimated length: 45 minutes
