Translations in languages other than English are machine translated and are not yet accurate. No errors have been fixed yet as of March 21st 2021. Please report translation errors here. Make sure to backup your correction with sources and guide me, as I don't know languages other than English well (I plan on getting a translator eventually) please cite wiktionary and other sources in your report. Failing to do so will result in a rejection of the correction being published.

Note: due to limitations with GitHub's interpretation of markdown (and pretty much every other web-based interpretation of markdown) clicking these links will redirect you to a separate file on a separate page that isn't my GitHub profile page. You will be redirected to the seanpm2001/WacOS repository, where the README is hosted.

Translations are done with Google Translate and Bing Translate due to issues with limited support on other translation services, like DeepL. I will replace Google Translate in the future. I am working on finding an alternative. For some reason, the formatting (links, dividers, bolding, italics, etc.) is messed up in various translations. It is tedious to fix, and I do not know how to fix these issues in languages with non-latin characters, and right to left languages (like Arabic) extra help is needed in fixing these issues

Due to maintenance issues, many translations are out of date and are using an outdated version of this README article file. A translator is needed. Also, as of April 9th 2021, it is going to take me a while to get all the new links working.

WacOS-Description

A Linux distribution that mimics MacOS (modern and classic) iOS, and other Apple operating systems, but is open, customizable, and free to use on non-apple hardware.

About

About WacOS.

Concept of WacOS (from August 27th 2019)

Note

As of May 27th 2020 at 11:21 pm, this project is still only just a concept, and is in no way functional yet. I am just laying the foundation at the moment.

Thought of by Sean on August 27th 2019

More info

WacOS will be a Linux based operating system that acts like MacOS, but with improved functionality, being more open, and having new and other features.

its naming (LacOS didn't seem like a good name, as it sounds like "Lack OS" which shouldn't be associated with a Linux distribution, and it was 5:33 in the morning, so I don't know where the W came from. Just note the W does not stand for Windows.

Pronounced like: Whack O S or Walk O S or however you would like to pronounce it

It can act as a MacOS port that isn't developed by apple, and doesn't need an expensive computer to run with. Linux users constantly go through phases of different operating systems themes, a lot of Linux users go through a MacOS phase, I haven't yet, but I could in the future.

It will be highly functional, and will be written in C for the core, and Python for the system, as I want to continue to spread Python, it is a great programming language, it is simple to write, and very powerful.

Some features include a desktop interface changer that can make the distro function like any version of MacOS, without the restrictiveness, and proprietary functionality.

iOS and MacOS programs from System 1 to the latest version, and iPhone OS 1 to the latest version will be supported.

Development requirements

The system will be at minimum 64 bit, but will contain 32 bit, 16 bit, 8 bit, and 4 bit libraries (I also plan on having 128 bit libraries)

The system MUST be light, with no more than 1 Gigabyte of RAM being used by the system itself at any time. On Idle, it should use no more than 500 Megabytes of RAM.

It must be compatible with virtualization software like VirtualBox, Qemu, VMWare, etc. If anyone wants to go through and make it compatible with hyper-V, it is completely optional

If this is to be completed, it must be better than Windows and MacOS in terms of functionality, and must meet these development requirements to do so.

Kernel

This project utilizes the Linux kernel. I currently can't connect it via a submodule, as I still can't figure out how to make Git submodules, but the kernel can be downloaded via these sources:

Kernel.org: The Linux Kernel archives

File Systems

Read more about the available file systems here

WacOS Default File Systems

Overview

WacOS by default has 5 options for a file system upon install. The current 5 options are:

  1. HFS

  2. HFS+

  3. EXT4

  4. APFS

  5. OpenZFS

Experimental

Support for HFS, APFS, and OpenZFS is currently experimental. APFS might be the hardest, due to it being so new, and having to be reverse engineered first. HFS might be difficult as well due to how old the format is.

BTRFS is currently under consideration for being a 6th option for a default file system.

Recommendations

For Apple fans: HFS+, APFS

For less-technical Apple fans: EXT4

For Apple fans with old Apple virtual machines: HFS

For everyone: EXT4

For massive data: OpenZFS

Wiki

Archives by year 2021

The WacOS Wiki is the key documentation center for this project. Unfortunately, it is only available in English (US)

The WacOS Wiki archives the entirety of Apples history, along with its relation to WacOS and its sub-projects. It contains over 210 pages, and is far from complete.

The Wiki is written in Markdown and HTML.

This project uses master as the main branch. For compatibility reasons, it will not be renamed, but will likely be cloned to a different branch in the future (it won't be main it will be WacOS-dev)

You can view other branches here

Browsers

View browser source code

The goal of the WacOS project is to emulate all of Apples software in a specific open source, friendly fashion. WacOS contains 3 web browsers, of which 2 are Apple recreations:

  • Mozilla Firefox (Included as a browser choice, one of the 3 default browsers) {Engine: Gecko}

  • OpenCyberdog (An open source recreation of Apples first web browser, Cyberdog) {Engine: Undetermined}

  • Savannah (An open source recreation of the Safari web browser) {Engine: WebKit}

TenFourFox is not currently supported, as it doesn't fit with the project. Support for other browsers (such as PaleMoon) is currently being considered.

The following browsers will never be added to the list of default browsers:

  • Microsoft Edge

  • Google Chrome

  • Google Chromium

  • Internet Explorer

  • Samsung Internet

  • AOSP (Android Operating System Stock Browser)

  • Safari

  • Cyberdog

  • AOL Explorer

Desktop Environment

View sub-repo

WacOS uses a modified version of the Skeuowie desktop environment (also known as the S Desktop Environment, or SDE) it uses Skeuowie in a special mode known as Wac Mode that allows WacOS customizations and compatibility.

About Skeuowie

Skeuowie is a desktop environment that is inspired by KDE principles, and has a 100% focus on Skeuomorphism opposed to flat design.

Fonts

Software status

All of my works are free some restrictions. DRM (Digital Restrictions Management) is not present in any of my works.

DRM-free_label.en.svg

This sticker is supported by the Free Software Foundation. I never intend to include DRM in my works.

I am ssing the abbreviation "Digital Restrictions Management" instead of the more known "Digital Rights Management" as the common way of addressing it is false, there are no rights with DRM. The spelling "Digital Restrictions Management" is more accurate, and is supported by Richard M. Stallman (RMS) and the Free Software Foundation (FSF)

This section is used to raise awareness for the problems with DRM, and also to protest it. DRM is defective by design and is a major threat to all computer users and software freedom.

Please note that the Linux Kernel contains a feature called DRM, which isn't bad (because it isn't a type of Digital Restrictions Management, on Linux, it stands for Direct Rendering Manager) there are other projects that unfortunately got a bad name due to the bad DRM term of Digital Restrictions Management.

Manpages need improvement

Manpages need improvement

The manpages on this project were added yesterday (2022, Thursday, January 13th) and are a copy and paste of the existing documentation from the README.md file, which already didn't contain in-depth enough information for a manual. Along with this, the syntax of the ROFF files is not accurate, and I don't have a way of testing it.

The manpages need improvement.

Description

It is that time of year where new Apple operating systems are in beta, and soon to be released. This years lineup includes:

  • MacOS Sonoma (MacOS 14.0)
  • iOS 17
  • iPadOS 17
  • tvOS 17

  • WacTVOS 17
  • WhyWatchOS 10

I will eventually get to this when I have the time.

WacOS repository version

[Broken links] [Chore] Links to local copies of whyWatchOS are broken

Prerequisites

  • I verified that this is not an existing issue
  • This is not a question, poll, or discussion
  • I checked the documentation to understand that the issue I report is not a normal behavior

Description

Within the project documentation, I added links to whyWatchOS 1 to 10 today. I didn't notice until version 9 that I had been entering them incorrectly, and decided to keep going with the bad copies, and report it later. The exact issue is that local links are written as /whyWatchOS/10/ when they should be /WhyWatchOS/10/ due to inconsistency with file naming. I don't have the time to fix this, so I am putting it out as an extra chore for if I have the time, or for whoever can't stand the inconsistency.

I may upload a separate /whyWatchOS/ directory, and deprecate the /WhyWatchOS/ directory to fix the issue.

[Review needed] Swap file creator

[Review needed] Swap file creator

I created a new component of the system today, which is a SWAP file creator. It isn't functional yet, but I have already run into a design problem:

Modern SWAP files are very large. For reference, my laptops SWAP file is 2 gigabytes (2 trillion bytes) the SWAP file maker I made is designed to take up less memory in its source code, but build a SWAP file byte by byte, running a command for every blank byte added to the SWAP file located at SWAPFILE.bin (which I will change to .swp in the future) I can't just upload a SWAP file to GitHub, as 1. It would be too large and 2. Not every SWAP file for every installation is the same size.

This is a fragment of the 3rd variation of the C code for reference. It is not functional yet and is mostly pseudocode (you might need to view the full file to get all the context)

// Create a custom size SWAP file
int customSWAP(void) {
	scanf.csw("Please specify the size of the SWAP file in bytes. Make sure the SWAP file is less than 1/4 of your RAM size\n");
	if (csw / 4 > ramSize) {
		printf("The specified size is too large\n");
		break;
	} else {
		x = int(0)
		while (x != csw) {
			file.append(0) to file("/SWAPFILE.bin");
			x == x + 1;
			if response == true {
				response == false;
			} else if response == false {
				response == true;
			}
			if (x == csw) {
				printf("A " + int(csw) + " byte SWAP file has been created!\n");
				break;
			}
	}
}

The full source code can be viewed here or here

I have been told by family members that this sounds like a virus. I don't know enough about it to agree, but I feel like doing this could damage/destroy a storage device easily. I wonder if there is a better way of doing this. Does anyone know?

There needs to be a centralized place for official and custom BOOTCONFIG files, as part of keeping this project clean and organized. It should be stored in the home repository (/seanpm2001/WacOS/)

[Maintenance] Project Wiki maintainers wanted

[Maintenance] Project Wiki maintainers wanted

I am looking for trusted maintainers for this projects Wiki. The project Wiki aims to document the complete history of Apple, along with how it reflects onto this project.

Developers should be able to know:

  • Markdown

  • Internet Safety

  • How to cite sources

  • The English language (at a literate level, while being able to write in terms that the general public can understand (Wikipedia's rules are an example))

  • Professional Internet etiquette

  • Intermediate or higher knowledge of the Apple company, its products, and its history

  • Intermediate or higher knowledge of the WacOS project and its goals

The only problem I currently see with maintenance is that I currently don't entirely trust the Wiki system. I fear that an account may be hijacked, and the Wiki could then be vandalized with slurs and other vandalism, including blanking the page.

Need answer on this first

Description

GitHub user :octocat: Devos50 made massive contributions to iOS virtualization by creating a functional iPhoneOS 1 virtual machine. I feel that this project should benefit from this, as there is no functional WhyPhoneOS system yet. This will be just one of many tools/software LIBraries that WacOS will use.

Peterhil demo fixes

Peterhil demo fixes

There are some issues related to the web demo I received. I am asking the community for help on how to fix them.

The demo can be found at BaSYS/1/UI_Demo/Web/Peterhil/

Bugs

The credits dialog box covers the display when going into full screen mode. I want to try to put it lower into the page, as I can't just remove it (that would be plagiarism)

Warnings

The Apple Logo Unicode character may be unsupported on your system (for me, on Ubuntu 20.04, it shows up as a broken character, as my system does not have good Unicode support) I won't replace it with an Emoji, as it would ruin the project (because it wouldn't match, and because the apple emoji is different on most systems)

Other

The menu and other graphics/buttons are currently just a still image, and can't be used. The only functional part is the credits dialog, and the finder bar (although none of the options work)
