bhartrhari's Issues

Viewing a K-page with one edition/version frozen at the top

From Suhas:

A minor suggestion:
It may be nice to allow the reader to freeze one of the editions at the top, so they can scroll down and compare

Will likely require adding some Javascript to the page / turning the static HTML page into a web app, so will try to get to this later.

Align M. R. Kale

Allow multiple scans for each region (group)

This already came up with "Gopinath1914" and "Gopinath1896", but will come up even more with the various scans and editions available for M. R. Kale (#6). We should have a single box of text (maybe a latest or preferred edition?), and be able to show multiple scans for it.

Add search

Should be possible to search for "bald", "खल्वाटो" etc

Give Kosambi-numbers to all tracked verses

Into the spreadsheet. Should be reasonably easy, start with No 1 and keep going, use text search to find verses.

Some are in Kosambi, but not encountered in any of the Bhartrhari editions I've looked at so far:

  • 202
  • 204
  • 209
  • 214
  • 219
  • 222
  • 232
  • 241
  • 255
  • 259
  • 260
  • 261
  • 262
  • 266
  • 276
  • 291
  • 295
  • 305
  • 310
  • 322
  • 327
  • 346
  • 351

Complete aligning Tawney

Partly done, but had to stop because I wasn't very familiar with the Vairāgya-śataka :-) But can continue now.

OCR Gopinath

Now that we have search (#26) and I'm trying to add P.E.More (#7), I'm finding it would be really useful to be able to search through his text. Also maybe merge the two versions, once #25 is ready.

Add per-book (source) pages

  • One page for Ryder, one page for Brough, one for Tawney, (+ reproduce the ones for Telang and Kosambi), etc.
  • Each of them can have each verse, and next to it a link to "other versions". Clicking on it will lead to the kNNN.html page.

Some header info for each page

Someone visiting a K-page (like https://shreevatsa.net/bhartrhari/web/K194.html) or a book page (like https://shreevatsa.net/bhartrhari/web/Ryder.html) should see some explanatory text at the top, saying what this page is about.

Possible additional ideas:

  • Different background colour for different kinds of pages (books and verses)
  • A header / name for each Bhartṛhari verse, that is a short name for it, e.g. “varaṃ parvata-durgeṣu” or whatever. (ASCII would be good, so that it go into the URL, instead of the K-num?)

Also tag/export relevant Kosambi verses from Group III

Most verses of interest are in Group 1 and 2 (numbers 1–352), but I've also encountered (in translations/editions I've looked at so far) quite a few from Group 3 (numbers > 352):

  • 353 akiṃcanasya dāntasya śāntasya samacetasaḥ
  • 412 iyatyetasmin vā niravadhicamatkṛtyatiśayo
  • 422 uttiṣṭha kṣaṇam ekam udvaha guruṃ dāridya-bhāraṃ sakhe

  • 630 bhikṣā kāmadudhā dhenuḥ

  • 678 yad vaktraṃ muhur īkṣase na dhanināṃ

  • 806 sudhāmayo'pi kṣayarogaśāntyai
  • 807 sūnuḥ sac-caritaḥ satī priyatamā svāmī prasādonmukhaḥ

At least these ones need to be manually tagged in the proofreader, and exported into https://shreevatsa.net/tmp/2023-03/kosambari.html

Add more works

In order of priority. Some suggested by Suhas; others I'd already created issues for:

Remove dependence on archive.org

The region images are currently served from books hosted on archive.org. This is:

  • slow,
  • requires an internet connection even for local testing,
  • unreliable: We've already had one instance of a book disappearing.

So would be good to self-host.
