marshall-crime-analysis's Issues

Milestone 3 Feedback

I like the simplicity of your app - it's not overwhelming to use.

  • Even though the city you're focusing on is highlighted in red, including all the other cities is overwhelming to look at. Could you try dividing the cities into regions (i.e. North Eastern USA) and that way you can compare only a few cities.
  • Could you rename the axes to improve readability?
  • Since the drop-down menu is worded as City to compare, could you have two drop-down menus. Both drop-down menus could contain city names, and you could select two cities to directly compare on your plot (and not include any other cities).
  • Since the variable names appear as column names in the table, could you rename them so they user is able to easily interpret them.

Milestone 3 Feedback

When looking at the datatable, there is a lot of whitespace on the right of your main plot that you may want to make use of. Perhaps some summary plots like a histogram of the selected data for the latest year (or a year you allow the user to select).

Im unsure of your usage scenario, but I found that the plot does a good job at showing overruling trends through time, but is less effective at getting a snapshot of a particular year. Maybe the option to switch between plot types, or some secondary plots could aid with this.

Allowing comparison between multiple cities (do I want to move to Houston or Austin?) would be pretty useful for if your app is designed to help people see crime in various cities before moving there. As it currently stands, you have to remember which line was the first one, and then switch them and compare the two, which can be difficult if one of the cities is in the large mass of lines.

In your dropdown menu, many cities have their state also in the line, whereas some do not. I'm not sure if this is fixable, but I think it would look cleaner if this was uniform for all of the cities.

Are some of the categories contained with in the others? I noticed that violent crimes was in the middle of your radio buttons, but they appeared to be made up of some of the other categories above and below them. Are there more categories that are non-violent crimes you could include? I think some clarification on how these work, or are meant to be used could be helpful as well. But this, as well as some of the other comments really depend on your use cases, which I was not clear on.
