Even a small defect on a train track can have a significant impact on a train moving at high speeds. As they are small, detecting and classifying these track defects by visual inspection can be very difficult. On the other hand, it is easy to detect the impact small defects have on the train cabin. That is, the train will shake significantly when going over a defect. So if we can accurately measure the train car motion, then we will be able to detect problematic parts of the track. All trains have a camera mounted on the driver car looking down at the tracks (shown above). When the train car shakes, the camera’s view of the tracks will suddenly change. We will aim to answer the question: can you use the camera image to calculate how the train car has moved?
