Right now with DIY people need to upload the firmware anyway. There is currently a plan underway to make it much faster. You attach each tracker to your PC via a microusb and then hit 'push wifi' and bam they are on the network, so it's quite a painless procedure. In terms of a congested network they don't actually require much if any data, and a lot of people have been using USB wifi dongles to just create a dedicated hotspot which works quite well.

That being said, I think a wifi to usb gateway would be cool, it's just something which wouldn't be needed for the majority of the users (at least the ones who have tested so far).

Still! Others on this project will see this and may have something different to say

There's a couple of reasons why we don't use bluetooth, but ultimately it comes down to:

  • limit restrictions on connecting (5+ Bluetooth connections is not really feasible).
  • Bluetooth 4 suffers from occlusion and when is was being developed there weren't really want Bluetooth 5 boards

The first one is really the biggest issue!

Also the Thrillseeker video is very out of date compared to our current set up!

Ah yes, that actually makes sense, haven't thought of that.

A WiFi-to-USB gateway would also be an idea. Maintaining the same principle as push-button pairing, but the Gateway acting as a WiFi AP with a hidden SSID. Since there are no other devices in that same network, discovery would be pretty fast.

Also, the full advantages of my first post would still be preserved: Nearer AP, since not everyone has their router in their room, empty network and USB connectivity at the other end for lower latency.

I totally agree.

No additional hardware development is required, and commercially available USB dongles can be used as is. Those who wish to track longer distances can also use models with external antennas.

I've had experience with the TPS becoming unstable when the ESP is covered by hand.
When a proximity AP exists, I think it can help solve this problem.
