Since the gist module pulls the description of a gist to use as the URL, if the description is very long, it will result in a very long URL. Maybe a filter to limit the slug length.

If a URL is not a valid URL, or more specifically wp_remote_get fails, then return and error and have that error handled by the JS.

A very slick feature for this plugin is that when a gist is created, it puts the URL in the post content and if the Oembed Gist plugin is present and activated, it will display beautifully. Without it, users will be underwhelmed and it would be nice to alert them to the full potential of embedding a gist.
