where is $DEVICE supposed to point?

I googled it to try and fix the errors myself, but i simply found that most of the instructions revolved around installing all the libraries and initializing the build environment appropriately which i've done! any idea? what the problem is?
I'm using a 64bit Ubuntu 11.10 system.
