Maze Theme - October 2020

The Theme - Traiblazers

Have an immersive theme reveal using A-Frame. Implement in the form of a maze, where the user should be able to navigate his/her way through a maze and reach the final destination, that is where the theme would be revealed.

Tasks

  • Maze using Aframe
  • Text Animation for final reveal
  • Modal with instructions

UI Wishlist

This list documents small UI improvements that are low priority, which is not assigned to anyone in particular. Feel free to add to the list.

  • Fix typography
  • Reduce clutter on the navigation bar
  • Resize headings based on screen size (about page)
  • Merge Video Centre and past editions page
  • Replace links in the footer with "Back to Top" button
  • "Unsticky" the navigation bar for small screens in landscape mode.
  • Update accordion button class on the salon page when other questions are opened.

Theme Reveal Objectives

  • Increase contrast of source image for world
  • Add white and reddish x's for paths to each house on source image
  • Change 'House 1', 'House 2' markers in front of each house from portal to something else

Changes in Video Centre

\

  • Change Title to "Talk Archives"

  • Move the slider to the right ( vertical ) or top. The horizontal bottom slider is not noticeable at times because of "The Fold", and people navigate only using the top tabs.

  • Change the style of the tab buttons for year. Should fit the overall theme, looks high contrast and thick border.

  • Don't allow videos from different tabs to play

  • video centre tab and arrow overflow

  • swipe to scroll videos

Improve page load times

Let's measure the page load times with network cache disabled (as that would be close to the experience of a first time visitor to the site)

Page Requests Data Transferred Page Load Time
Home page 44 2.68 Mb 14.87s
About Us 38 4.51 Mb 19.71s
Past Editions 44 11.32 Mb 1.37m
Talk Archives 114 4.03 Mb 24.50s
Team 53 1.79 Mb 10,6s
Partners 41 4.67 Mb 25.40s
Contact 43 2.80s 15.20s

While the page sizes are not bad, we should strive to reduce the number of requests. Firefox and Chrome allow six connections at a time and bottlenecks network speed.

Admittedly, I am on a shitty network connection (with 200kbps average speed). Is this a universal experience?

PageSpeed Insights: Mobile - 22/100, Desktop: 52/100

PingDom: 70/100 (Grade D)

Improvements

With #91 merged, Our PageSpeed Insight scores have improved to 34 (mobile) and 91 (desktop) and Pingdom score improves to 72 (Grade C).

With #95 merged, Our PageSpeed Insight scores have improved to 36 (mobile) and 94 (desktop).

Performance for the home page is much worse than any other page on mobile devices because the time taken to execute title.js
