2018_kenya's Introduction

Hi there ๐Ÿ‘‹, I'm Tim

I work at USAID as a data janitor/wrangler/scientist. Former Stata user/cheatsheet maker, now R-Studio + tidyverse. Sometimes GIS (Arc/QGIS), but R handles most of that now (thanks, sf).

A few recent projects with @achafetz & @baboyma:

  • selfdestructin5: Creates gt polished summary tables from a MSD
  • glitr: OHA SI plotting package to make adorned plots
  • glamr: utility functions to make working with PEPFAR data easier
  • COVIDutilities: pull COVID-19 data from JHU and return a tidy data frame

2018_kenya's Issues

FEWS Net Price Data Analysis

Ok, @baboyma, making a checklist for you.

  • Grab the FEWS markets
  • plot them on a map for Kenya and those near the Kenyan border
  • Create a filter that will extract those in Kenya and near
  • Merge the filtered markets with the price data over time.
  • Turn FEWS prices into real terms (I think they collect nominal data) - you'll need a CPI deflator from IMF or similar
  • Calculate inter and intra-market price anomalies/correlations/Coefficient of variation
  • Create a spatio-temporal map showing where lag/lead markets are and where market volatility is concentrated
  • Anything else you want to do to show your superpowers with technology

Complete foundational data wiki page

@deitelberg, please complete the Wiki Foundational Data. I'd recommend including a list of the essential data/shapefiles, where they live, and where they are from.

  • Official project crosswalks (County and constituency at minimum)
  • Boundary files - Admin 0 - 3
  • Conservancy areas
  • ASAL boundaries
  • Other things I forgot already
  • Kenya FTF ZOI version 1.0 and 2.0

MSME data

@deitelberg. Can you give me a status update on this?

  • Document MSME data set

  • Determine how sampling was done and how to apply sampling rates

  • Determine process for reproducing tables in report with a focus on data identified in needs assessment

  • create maps with key indicators

Election Data Wrangling

@rcp7373

  • download 2013 election results
  • calculate roll-ups at the constituency and county levels
  • standardize constituency codes + names
  • create 2013 table for election results based on 2017 table provided by tim

February 2018 Tasks

  • Deflate MUAC Prices and re-analyze/plot
  • Vet Budget data and analyze
  • Create visualizations of Kenya Election data in Tableau
  • Create visualizations and narrative around shock maps in Tableau (@bmccusker - narrative)
  • Explore tile maps and populate with appropriate data (@deitelberg)
  • Setup a catch-up meeting to plan for Feb and beyond (@tessam30)

Budget issues to resolve

  • Many County Assembly development budgets are 0, missing or not reported in 2017.
  • Homa Bay 2015 Econ Growth (3) really was 18.34? Number seems legit. Note that many counties do not report
  • Machakos jumps to nearly 2 in 2016 for Transport and Infrastructure (4). Check Numbers.
  • Tana River is very high in 2015 for Econ Growth (5); Tharaki Nithi also worth checking out.
  • Kisumu and Nandi are high for Education in 2016, and 2017 respectively.
  • Uasin Gishu shoots up in 2016 for Health (7); Should the 19.3 really be 193? ~ Numbers match if yes.
  • Kisumu Agriculture shoots up in 2017 (9) to nearly 4 --> see table Table 3.51 in the 2017/18 report pp141/120
  • Embu in 2016 is odd at over 60; Table Table 3.18 was scraped incorrectly in 2016/17. Need to verify everything

Shock maps and narrative

@tessam30 - Start developing a Tableau narrative around the shocks maps. Determine additional data sources needed to add contextual arguments.
