Lol. Big question for me :P
From a practical standpoint, open source is the reason I can do what I do. I self-taught programming, and had the source code not been available to look at, I would have never had the opportunity to learn it (without significant incurred debt). It's made it possible for me to work on larger-scale projects (like the io.js website), and has made it possible for me to teach others how to get started.
From a philosophical standpoint, I believe that information belongs to no one. What that information accomplishes, and the resources to accomplish it, are a separate issue, but I think the words and symbols and ideas that run the great thing we call the interwebs should be available to everyone, and should be available to contribute to the betterment of mankind.
Does that answer you question? Kinda meandering, sorry :P

I've been thinking about this a lot, and I think I revisit this question every so often and take pulse of it. I think additionally why I open source is because programming is a tool to do things, and the more tools there are, the more I can do. By open sourcing, I give others the opportunity to build off my tools, and possibly create new ones. I personally value the number of tools available over the transient compensation that I'd get for a particular tool. I mean, I can't afford not to have as many tools as possible to solve business concerns.

Personally I found this a very difficult question to answer, too.
