What fields and metadata are important to store in the database?

I noticed that method convert_pdf_to_txt referred a StackOverflow post, while a recent comment to it mentioned that the 'codec' parameter has been removed. Also, another comment provided a much simpler solution: from pdfminer.high_level import extract_text then text = extract_text('report.pdf').
I'm trying to learn the usefulness of such small updates on StackOverflow. Would these comments help improve your code? I understand that such problem might not happen in real life situation. In that case, do you think this comment can help prevent future bugs (for example, when the code were reused somewhere else)?
