[JAXB] references unmarshalling only works on some java runtimes

I've been banging my head on this one for a while. With every other JDK I tried other than Oracle jdk1.8.0_77, unmarshalling references always results in null java references of empty java collections.

Example with http://localhost:8088/bgg-api/api/v1/things/hot :
