Assumption: The paper project lives in a git repository.

Possible goals:

1. We can merge upstream changes from this repository to the paper project.
2. We can merge downstream changes from the paper project to this repository.
3. We can compile the paper project without understanding about the latex-styles repository.

Goals 1 and 2 would be easy to achieve by organizing the latex-styles repository as a texmf tree, independently of the paper repository. But then users have to check out both repositories and mess with their local-texmf configuration in order to compile a paper, which misses goal 3.
