base-digital-collections-template's Introduction

base-digital-collections-template

general collections (photographs)

https://www.lib.uidaho.edu/digital/

A highly customized version of CollectionBuilder-CSV used to generate University of Idaho Library Digital Collections.

The main branch represents our base collection template. Additional branches contain a variety of individual collections with customized metadata and features. Updates to the main branch can be merged into the collection branches to maintain the centralized template.

This repository is specifically for building U of I Library projects and trails behind development of the general CollectionBuilder-CSV template. If you are interested in this approach, please visit CollectionBuilder to learn more!

CollectionBuilder

https://collectionbuilder.github.io/

CollectionBuilder is a project of University of Idaho Library's Digital Initiatives and the Center for Digital Inquiry and Learning (CDIL) following the Lib-Static methodology. Powered by the open source static site generator Jekyll and a modern static web stack, it puts collection metadata to work building beautiful sites.

The basic theme is created using Bootstrap. Metadata visualizations are built using open source libraries such as DataTables, Leafletjs, Spotlight gallery, lazysizes, and Lunr.js. Object metadata is exposed using Schema.org and Open Graph protocol standards.

License

This license does NOT include any objects or images used in digital collections, which may have individually applied licenses described by a "rights" field. CollectionBuilder code is licensed MIT. This license does not include external dependencies included in the assets/lib directory, which are covered by their individual licenses.

base-digital-collections-template's Issues

NW postcards manual migration

Northwest Historical Postcards Collection, https://www.lib.uidaho.edu/digital/postcards/
Requires some careful metadata and object work. Currently 532 images (postcards with just front) and 279 pdfs (postcards with front and back).

  • prep images from archive
  • change PDF items into "multiple" object type instead (i.e. two images not a pdf). this will involve creation of new rows with parentid. Each postcard will have a parent row with the full metadata, then two rows with the parentid which contain only the image links (front and back).

barstock "n.d." dates

@kxuidaho @aweymo-ui new items added to barstock contain "n.d." as a date value. The "date" field should only contain ISO dates, no other text (i.e. "n.d." = blank). Please clean up these dates! If necessary create an "archival_date" field to hold the information.

fix rightsstatements uri

Should never include https://rightsstatements.org/page/ (copied from the public site) should be the actual URI http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/

  • phs
  • riegger
  • ames
  • cattle (in documents template)
  • vandalvideo (in campus)

Should never include a query string, like ?language=en

collection citation

add to About template at bottom, "cite this collection" like source box.
add feedback form and contact.

review "blur" feature

  • practice of directly blurring thumbs and smalls files, rather than just in css
  • simplify implementation to allow easier updates
  • check in all visualizations

corrupt character check

check every CSV for corrupt character , replace, rebuild if necessary:

review Rights field and display

  • some rights seem to be trying to use Markdown formatting (e.g. spec email). avoid doing this for better interoperability of metadata.
  • ensure rights statements make sense across all collections
  • since search index ingests "rightsstatement" field in attempt to provide facet of rights (e.g. usecase: I want to search public domain images), ensure rightsstatement fields are correct, consistent, and mapped correct in config-search-index across collections
  • check specific collection issues (e.g. plcphotos)

Cougar Dave browse blur on long PDFs

Running into image quality problems on the browse page of Cougar Dave for long PDF images. I replaced all smalls and thumbs with the updated rake task but there are still some blurry images on the browse page.
