I got a pretty detailed answer over at the Vega hub. It's a problem with react-vega afterall. vega/vega#1485 (comment)
It would be really nice if anyone here want to take the time to look at the issue and potentionally fix it. This is a bug that is preventing our team from using Vega the way we currently want to use it. Thanks!

This seems to be a problem in Vega itself, but i'll leave the issue open in case anyone here have a solution.
Bug exists in their own example if you just change the renderer repeatedly: https://vega.github.io/editor/#/examples/vega/county-unemployment (Keep pressing the Renderer: # button repeatedly) you will notice how the hover get laggier the more you poke around on the site, as more and more event listeners are added.
