cky-parser's Introduction

CKY Chart Parser

A syntactic parser using the CKY chart parsing algorithm.

Usage

The parser takes two files as input, the first containing grammar rules for the language, and the second containing all sentences that should be tested.

python parser.py grammar.txt sentences.txt

The Grammar File

The grammar file should consist of newline separated rules in Chomsky Normal Form.

Example Grammar File:

S -> ART NP
S -> ART X
X -> ADJ X
X -> ADJ NP
NP -> ADJ NOUN
ART -> the
ADJ -> beautiful
ADJ -> tropical
NOUN -> fish

The Sentences File

The sentences file is simply a newline separated list of sentences to test against the grammar.

Example Grammar File:

the fish
the tropical fish
the beautiful tropical fish

The Ouput

The output currently shows the original sentence that was parsed, the number of successful parses give the specified grammar rules, and the contents of each cell in the parsing table.

Example Ouput File:

PARSING SNETENCE: the fish
NUMBER OF PARSES FOUND: 0
CHART:
  chart[1,1]: ART
  chart[1,2]: -
  chart[2,2]: NOUN

PARSING SNETENCE: the beautiful tropical fish
NUMBER OF PARSES FOUND: 1
CHART:
  chart[1,1]: ART
  chart[1,2]: -
  chart[1,3]: -
  chart[1,4]: S
  chart[2,2]: ADJ
  chart[2,3]: -
  chart[2,4]: X
  chart[3,3]: ADJ
  chart[3,4]: NP
  chart[4,4]: NOUN

Next Steps

  • Make the output of the program show the successful parses of each sentence rather than the contents of the table.
