What I've done previously is use the API:

I've wired that up to a switch (amazon dash button) on the wall to change dashboards, but you could easily set up a cron task to call that endpoint periodically and tell it to change the current dashboard.
I did want to implement auto-changing dashboards at some point as well, but this served my needs better at the time.

Thanks! Should be possible to use a data source for this too I guess? Do data sources refresh even when not connected to a widget? The "refresh" could internally trigger that API as a side-effect. A workaround i guess :)

That seems quite feasable yeah. I don't think datasources care if a widget is listening or not :)
