Moderator's Guide

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
While organizing an event is a lot of fun, knowing how to moderate is a different skillset and we need to cover this to some degree in the handbook.

Describe the solution you'd like
There will be a section in the handbook to help organizers moderate their events. For the purposes of this issue, we will focus on moderating from the following perspectives:

  • How to kick off an event (i.e., things to consider like announcements, etc.)
  • How to end an event (i.e., closing remarks and encouraging attendees to speak or stay engaged with the community
  • How to manage a panel when hosting a Q&A, especially for difficult scenarios where a single speaker takes over too much or does not share well with other speakers.

The PR templating in github in the template repository need a branch in order to work.

Keep the branch up to date may be difficult.

Implementing an other solutions has plain text text in issue template and a sub PR templating in the presentation repo may be a good choice.

Automatically archive old events

Describe the bug

Currently old events are staying on the site (like CFP deadlines) and appear current when no longer relevant.

To Reproduce

  1. Visit CFPs for an example.

Expected behavior

  1. Events should automatically move to an "archive" list.

RFC #1: Remove local events from the site

Proposal

Vue.js Events will no longer track local events (that do not have an option for people to attend via streaming).

Rationale

Most of the traffic for Vue.js Events has been most successful at helping to surface what meetups are available in areas. Beyond that, users are often relying on their local resources rather than a cumulative list of events around the world.

Future Ideas

It would be nice to eventually get statistics around the number of Vue.js events around the world, but this should be a separate task to tackle since the value proposition behind the amount of work to get this done is probably more than is valuable.

Deprecate VueMeetups.org

  • Turn off VueMeetups.org
  • Redirect traffic to new site
  • Update Vuemeetsup.org repo with relevant info

RFC #2: Prioritize Conference / Workshop events

Proposal

Provide more thorough coverage of all conferences and workshops that core team members / community partners are speaking at in order to raise awareness for these events.

Some ideas regarding this include:

  • Including non-Vue centric conferences that include Vue topics
  • Giving priority to Vue centric conferences that include a better design banner and call to actions for various aspects
  • Upgrading the home page to surface important information like deadlines for conferences (i.e., CFPs, registration, etc)

Rationale

As a tangential effect of RFC #1 to remove local meetup events, this would provide more time and screen real estate to be devoted to larger community events that people are more likely to travel to / attend due to things like company paid training and such.

Follow same styling for navbar as parent site.

Describe the bug
The navbar although looks very nice, seems to have some design in-consistencies with the navbar over at the parent website: https://vuejs.org

Most prominent being the search bar size and overall size of the elements in the navbar.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Open https://events.vuejs.org
  2. Open https://vuejs.org
  3. Spot the differences in design.

Expected behavior
This could be intentional as this is a separate repository but if it isn't then it seems like the navbar could be perhaps made consistent with the parent website.

Events Manager

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
A clear and concise description of what the problem is. Ex. I'm always frustrated when [...]

It is annoying for users to update the manifest when they need to considering they need to manually update a JSON file.

Describe the solution you'd like
A clear and concise description of what you want to happen.

An app that lives in the repo and will run locally to manage all events.

Describe alternatives you've considered
A clear and concise description of any alternative solutions or features you've considered.

While there is something to be said about a solution with a database and a live web application for people to hit, that requires a significant more effort in comparison and has unknown costs associated with it.

RFC #3: Create boilerplate resources for organizers

Proposal

Currently we have an Organizers Handbook which helps organizers get started with their meetup; but there's a lot more that we can do for organizers:

  1. Provide more guidance on workflow processes
  2. Create more infrastructure to make organizer's life easier (i.e., boilerplate social media strategy, slides, websites, etc.)
  3. Create a guide for conference organizers that is written from a participant / speaker's perspective to allow for an effective feedback loop while maintaining a single source of truth that any conference organizer may be able to use in the future while also collecting best practices from the organizers' perspective

Rationale

Organizing communities is a tough job, so we want to provide as much support as we can to organizers as possible.

Vue.js Events 2.0 RFCs

Introduction

Since the creation of Vue.js Events, we have had a lot of success in helping many new meetups gain visibility as well as providing resources to new and experienced organizers. However, as time has gone on, some of the original intentions of the project have not been used as much. As a result, I've created the following RFCs (Request of Comments) in preparation for a Vue.js Events 2.0 Roadmap.

List of All RFCs

  1. Remove local events from the site #84
  2. Prioritize Conference / Workshop events on the site #85
  3. Create boilerplate resources for organizers #86
  4. Create more resources for speakers #87

Create boilerplate resource for meetup website

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

There are lots of options as far as how to create a website, but there isn't a boilerplate that contains best practices and an easy path forward for organizers.

Describe the solution you'd like

There should be a boilerplate for creating a website for a meetup group at no cost to the organizer.

Describe alternatives you've considered

Use https://github.com/VueJS-IN/vue-bangalore as inspiration

What is the name of your group?
Vue.js Aarhus

Where is the group located?

Who are the organizers?
The meetups are organized by myself (@simoneldevig) in collaboration with people from the companies who sponsors and host the different meetups.

RFC #4: Create more resources for speakers

Proposal

We currently have a Speakers Handbook, but in order to help encourage and support new & experienced speakers, some ideas include:

  1. New speaker resources (i.e., training, guidance)
  2. Providing a forum for new speakers to get experience (via online events / recording)
  3. Guidance for conference call for proposals

Rationale

Public speaking can be intimidating to break into and requires more support than some may admit as it can easily lead to speaker burnout if one is not careful. As a result, we want to create the resources and environment necessary to encourage new speakers to take the stage while also supporting our current speakers.
