wren's Issues

Manufacturers Guide

Similar to the Design and Assembly Guide, develop the Manufacturers Guide for Wren Technology.

Racking - testing a standard bay width for racking capacity.

Racking testing is a vital structural requirement for Wren, as the design of timber structures is usually governed by stiffness rather than strength as the structure reaches the serviceability limit state (SLS) before the ultimate limit state (ULS). The racking performance of the Wren chassis needs to be measured in accordance with Eurocode 5 and relevant test standards.

This will likely require a laboratory based testing a standard bay width, at an agreed height (or set of heights) for racking capacity.

Fire tests, or supporting documentation using established values

Looking for assessement and/or testing on fire resistance of typical Wren load-bearing external wall and roof construction to meet Eurocode 5 requirements.

  • Charring rates of 18mm spruce plywood structure
  • Fire-retardant insulation specification (if required)
  • Internal/external lining specification

Rhino 6 Compatibility issues

Attempting to import the Wren grasshopper files into Rhino 6 causes unrecognized object errors for Elefront and Human. Attempting to have the package management resolve the issues automatically fails, as no package with the correct version is found.

Screws - testing the pull-out capacity of screw into end grain of ply

There is currently no data for the loading limits of screws fixed into end grain of plywood. This limits the possible connection points in the Wikihouse system and the additional joinery is costly in materials and fabrication time. If we can determine that the end-grain screw loads are comparable to the face-fixed screw loads it will cut down materials and allow more flexibility for design, particularly with cassette systems like Wren's end walls.

What we need help with:

  • Design a pull-out test to determine maximum structural loads
  • Carry out designed test using a loading rig and several sheet materials options beginning with 18mm WISA structural spruce plywood.
  • Document the testing process, collate data, and share back with project community

Compatibility with Mac

Hi,

First of all thanks for this wonderful project! (I'm into architecture and this seems to be the perfect opportunity to get involved)

I don't have much experience with Rhino (haven't really used it before actually), so bear with me if I'm asking beginner questions. I use Mac and tried out Rhino to run this project, but apparently the list of plugins required by Wren are not totally compatible with Mac Rhino.

Things that succeeded

Human

Things that failed

elefront

Is there any way to work around this problem? Or my best chance is to install Windows?

Upper storey Assembly.

How to make it simpler and safer to build upper storeys? Providing full protection from falling from height, minimal need for lifting equipment.

Wren system timeline

@claytonprest can you give any indication of when we might see the Wren system files in this repo? If there's anything I can do to help, I'm volunteering, though my CAD skills be rusty.

first-time-friendly

If you're new to Github and have never improved code or documentation here before, it can be a bit confusing. If this is you, you've come to the right place. Just leave a comment in here to ask any questions and tag @claytonprest, myself, or @johnrees . We can help you make an improvement to this documentation.
