The plot shows how the iterative merging of crosslinks into binding sites works.
In brief, neighboring crosslinks are merged into larger regions. These regions can exceed the desired final binding site width. Such larger regions have to be broken done into smaller pieces. This happens in an iterative process.
The plot shows how many of those regions are left to be resolved, over the size of these regions.
