This approach is BAD
I mean splitting into the separate images requires even more memory than simply using of separate images. Maybe you split them incorrectly, maybe it is not effective.
I have checked with 30 images placed onto a scrollview via UIImageView. Your approach is ~15 times worse than the standard one!!!
And vice versa you could add a code which creates UIViews/UIImageViews instead of UIImages by placing the original big image into the correct position.
