Typo in FAQ (#6) of The Network State

  1. How will you get land, if it’s all spoken for?. The short version is that we crowdfund
discontiguous territory around the world and network it together into an archipelago
of interconnected enclaves. A network state can thus can be visualized in a dashboard,
and you can watch it grow over time.

How to create Network State starting with a Physical Territory?

Been following the idea of Network States since Balaji started drafting the first blueprints.

My question is: How do I create a Network State leveraging a Physical Territory and brand I have already established?

I've co-founded a hospitality and f&b brand that has attracted thousands. We have been successful in attracting all sorts of "creative capital," if you will: artists, musicians, chefs, tech founders, business leaders etc.

Our location, being in a rural area, has benefited from reverse urbanisation resulting from the pandemic. Our internet connectivity is phenomenal, our cost of living relatively low. And we have helped build a thriving tourist town with a great entrepreneurial spirit here.

Our online community consists of over 120k followers on Facebook and around 35k Followers on Instagram.

How can we leverage all this to create a Network State? While we currently stand on half a hectare of beachfront space, we are looking to acquire a 10-hectare valley within striking distance of the beach to build an entry-level Network State (to start) with a bit more territory than the one we currently occupy.

Happy to have guidance on this as I hope to actualize starting early next year.

Error 502?

@balajis There is a Host Error thus is does not allow the content to be viewed. I'm an unsure how to fix it. I'm brand new to GitHub and barely made it through the tutorial!....now its fixed-don't know how...

Summary of typos in The Network State book

I couldn't find a repo for The Network State book, so I hope this is an alright place to log typos I found during the course of my reading.

Duplicate "also" on Kindle page 274/474

It is about "god, gays, and guns", but it's also also about censorship, surveillance. and inflation.

Missing "are", "between" instead of "among" on Kindle page 425/474

Moreover, while there is some commonality of feeling among Bitcoin holders, there are also strong differences.

I'm building a decentralized, digital nation. Here's what it looks like-

Hello,
Over the past few months, I've been working at it and it's still a work in progress.
I created a nation called BWO - Binod World Order. It's a project I applied with to Solana's India hackathon, and we were chosen as one of the winners.

This is our website- https://www.binodworldorder.com/
And this is our constitution- https://bwo.notion.site/The-Constitution-41137fc983dd4065a36e0ed244f6e260

The constitution explains why it's called BWO, and the significance of using the duck NFTs as an easy memetic point of entry. These are things that I've achieved with this so far-

✅ On-chain governance and verifiable proof of citizenship using the NFTs
✅ Memetic culture that is slowly growing into something unexpected (The #HighIQ hashtag is solely created by citizens)
✅ Organically growing to over 1200+ citizens across all citizen nodes
✅ No barrier of entry. Anyone can identify as a BWO citizen, regardless of whether they hold an NFT, our future token, etc. But participating in on-chain governance requires holders.
✅ Legally incorporated in a crypto-friendly jurisdiction.
✅ 100% organic growth. Reading the constitution is the only requirement.

Issues that I'm facing now-

  1. When I started working on this, there were almost no generative art projects. But right now, they're everywhere starting with BAYC and extending to 20 projects appearing everyday. Thus, the generative art market is saturated, and it's difficult to hook new users in this saturated market. I'm struggling to increase our population, as the memetic point of entry is failing because of reasonable market dynamics.

  2. Because the memetic point of entry is failing, there are far less eyes, and far lower hype surrounding the nation now than when we started. This is good in a way, as being small we can reiterate and focus on building a strong foundation, strengthen our fundamentals and build it out in stealth. But the lack of organic reach is also something that worries me, as building it out and remaining small isn't a great look for a global decentralized nation where the growth of our population is our primary metric of competence.

  3. No marketing and depending on citizens to spread the word. It is common for NFT projects to pay influencers, give equity to insiders and paid marketers, pump the hype artificially using bots and then dumping on retail. That is the structure of 99% of the NFT projects these days. As a decentralized nation, it was not only essential to avoid that route, but transparency and building an organic community was one of our primary objectives. But right now, it seems I have to figure out how to incentivize the citizens more to bring other citizens which is something I'm exploring right now.

Future goals-

🚀 Integrating IPFS and Solana and creating a sovereign, decentralized press run by pseudonymous individuals.
🚀 Building a decentralized, open source "Second Life" VR world. I'm currently working on integrating a solana wallet adapter in VR, so this is a long shot.
🚀 Crowdfund land, apartment complexes and hotels. Use them as sovereign hacker houses to accelerate open source development, education and as temporary residency for verified citizens.
🚀 Once we reach a considerable population, applying for official status and UN representation is on the table. Just like racial discrimination, gender discrimination, etc, is looked down upon, it is my belief that country-specific discrimination- regardless of whether it is a created country or a geographical one, would be relevant in the future and can be used to rally around this cause.

If you wish to join BWO, there is 0 cost to do so. Like I said, there is no need to buy the NFTs unless you want to participate in on-chain governance.

I'm posting this issue here because I think we all share a goal that we can discuss. I'm open to any advice/opinions/criticisms here in the comments, or in my DMs @_AbhisekBasu or @binodworldorder

The Dashboard - I'd like to create an interactive one

Just finished the book. Fascinating!

Right now the current dashboard has only 23 countries listed, and can easily be scanned by readers. Eventually it will become difficult to compare, sort, filter, and choose by various criteria.

I work a lot with dashboards, building various types, and also wrote a book on the topic.

I'd like to contribute an interactive dashboard if you are interested.
Possible features:

  • Sort by various metrics (Twitter followers, Discord users, etc)
  • Display charts comparing number of users, followers, etc.
  • Filter by topic, tag, simple search
  • Show summary stats on all countries
  • Other criteria

We can simply ask founders to add additional structured data in JSON-LD format, using this interactive tool for example. Once added to their home page, it can be periodically scraped, and fed to the dashboard's dataset. These would serve as additional criteria to filter by.

Another idea would be to create a template dashboard for each country, as mentioned in the book. We can think/plan for this if you want.

Looking forward to your thoughts.
Thanks!

Thought on Network State main treatise

Hey Everyone!

Just leaving a quick note on Balajis' https://1729.com/the-network-state

  • One thought is that maybe instead of nation states, which are often defined as groups that can legitimately use violence, maybe the way these will materialize is more like a mason or elk club network. Strong precedent lies already w the masons.

Figures 4 and 5 in "The Network State" white paper are flipped.

Figures 4 and 5 in "The Network State" white [aper (the-network-state.pdf) are flipped. "Figure 4: The Network State at ~100 people" has around 1,000 people in the count, while "Figure 5: The Network State at ~1,000 people" has around 100 people in the count.

Reduce number of cuts to metaverse in lecture recordings

frequent cutting from slides to the metaverse world in lecture 3 (link removed) is distracting. I personally think that the video should just stick to the slides since cutting to the metaverse world doesn't add much value and distracts from the content being discussed. For example, I think this cut to the metaverse distracts far more than it provides value

A great start of a wonderful idea, but we are still physical beings, distinct and separate from our metaverse avatar.

Hi Balaji,
I see here the germination of a great idea. Just a reminder that we are still physical beings. Yes, we can buy land or a condo anywhere, but the physical location of that property is limited to where a geographic government allows it. It would be difficult to locate an "island" of a crypto-based nation in mainland China, for example.

A network is any group of people whose actions are interrelated by some means, physical or ethereal. A network can be a group of people who believe in some idea, say a god (religion) or an ideology (politics). At any one time, each of us can be doing something and if that something pertains to a group, we are part of that networked group. Even without the internet, this grouping is possible: for example, during the Christian Reformation (Protestant Reformation), there were groups who have read Martin Luther's books and were influenced by him such that now they belonged to a network of pro-reformation people. In other words, as Niall Ferguson observed, the idea of networks preceded the advent of the internet. Imagine a world without the internet but with print technology: this idea of a network state would still be possible, and in fact it is partly the reason for how the USA got started.

The point is that the physical world cannot be discounted. The metaverse is important and I think I get that; but without a physical substrate, any network state is less impactful. We have to aim to get our ideas through physical barriers like the Chinese Great Internet Firewall because if China remains powerful and occupies Taiwan, there is no network state that can help that. However, if we can get through the Chines firewall barrier, we can show the common Chinese citizen that there are other possibilities than what their communist party has been presenting to them.

The objective of any network state is to expand its membership. The challenge is to expand this membership beyond ideologically erected firewalls. Let's form network states that do not take for granted legacy governments that rule the physical world. Part of the objective should be for network states to eventually rule the physical world and not just rely on the given state of geographical nation states.

Compressed network state dashboard figs into one figure that uses the logo as timeline.

I tried committing various small changes to a new branch in order to create a merge request but got permission denied error.

Anyway, the main thing I did was combining the different snaphots of the network state into 1 figure, where the logo is used as timeline.
In a somewhat similar fashion I would delete the list of network state facets at the top of page 9. Feels a bit like an endless enumeration :-).

Comments

To the creators and contributors of 1729, including @balajis, I'm enjoying the direction it's taking and it's a very thought provoking move. If you are able to create one of the first network states or at least demonstrate how in practice it would be bootstrapped then we have the potential to build borderless digital societies for the betterment of mankind. Good luck to you in your efforts.

Question: Does a single leader address complexity sufficiently?

According to @balajis, the network state has a single definitive leader/founder. And a hierarchy follows from there.

In a strict hierarchy, the complexity profile of an organization is basically limited by the complexity profile of its leader.

How can we reconcile the need for an open network (vs. hierarchy) to better address complexity on the one hand, with the need for a leader (or someone/something) to set a vision and direction on the other hand?

This reading partially lead to that question:

Broken link

On https://1729.com/summary (https://github.com/1729/content/blob/master/000-summary/summary.md), the "chapter one" link in the first paragraph is broken.
It leads to https://content.1729.com/the-network-state/ instead of https://1729.com/the-network-state/.

the sign-in magic link expires

I could not log in on 1729.com with the magic link that is sent to my email. I do get different links, but all of them redirect to "The magic link is invalid or expired."

Add description to youtube video

I think it would be great if the youtube videos had a description which, at the very least, provided essential links which are mentioned in the video. For example, lecture 3, https://github.com/1729/content/issues is shown, it would be great if it was linked in the description.

I think other links like a link to the slides would be useful too.

Proof of Workout -- MVP Dashboard

Let's create an easy way for groups to log health data and see a common dashboard for the entire group.

The most naive option I could think of was a google form with google sheets for the graphs. It can even be augmented with google apps script to do anything, literally. For example, it's trivial to create an email that is sent daily to the participants and remind them to log their exercise data.

The manual part, albeit time-consuming, enables easy integration with whatever hardware the member has.

PoC:

The form was created with ease of use in mind, so lists are better than manual input.

Quest

The MVP should have a dashboard to display information about the team progress, statistics about the team (e.g type of exercise preferred), and finally a leaderboard.

You can add any new input in the google form while keeping in mind that any extra input is extra friction, thus less chance that a member will go through the effort of actually filling it out.

You can use any tools you like (Typeform, data-studio, native app, etc.) for both data entry and data visualisation.

The end game is to automate this data entry with SDKs of various health hardware.

The Network State PDF Feedback

Here is some feedback on The Network State pdf.

Grammar and typos:

Page 13 - In footnote 4: "[...] fruitful ground for innovation -f much like interoperability between blockchains [...]" the -f should be removed

Page 23 - "Because the list isn't public." kind of awkwardly worded. Maybe get rid of "because"?

Page 28 - "[...] revoke that trust and exit to a new network state should it abuse it." The ending could be worded a bit more clearly, perhaps "[...] should it abuse that trust."

Page 29 - "Just to preface this section:" this phrase is unnecessary, nothing would be lost by cutting it.

Page 33 - typo under section 11: "[...] there are many mechanism to rebuild [...]" should be "mechanisms", plural.

Page 33 - extra period at the end of the first sentences to sections 11 and 13.

Content:

There's a great deal of jargon that might be a barrier to readers that aren't already familiar with these concepts. This might not be an issue if you're aiming specifically at a highly technical audience, but it's usually best practice to write for laymen by default. Terms like cadestration, M&A, Oauth-style integration, neo-Georgist, and REIT are scattered throughout, which might need to be defined if they're referred to frequently.

Page 20 - How did Google "close the borders" against Facebook? This may not be common knowledge.

Page 23 - Would nationalism really go extinct in the age of network states? I would expect the nationalistic impulse would simply be restated as "my network state is better than yours" rather than "my nation state is better than yours."

I hope this helped!

Broken Link

The link at the end of the sentence below is broken. It is located on this page The Network State:

The American establishment would never have picked Vitalik Buterin over Jerome Powell, but the young Canadian is on key dimensions a far more accomplished macroeconomist than the American sexagenarian; Buterin founded an economy, while Powell simply inherited it.

Please change to:

Thank you.
