ideally, we could make a virtually combined annotation set to go with our virtual genome. In addition to the convenience of not having to specify individual annotations for separate loading (which could probably be handled otherwise), this would allow all the annotations to reside in a single track rather than creating empty tracks on the subgenomes for which they aren't relevant.

my current approach is pretty naive and doesn't work properly when the boundary is crossed from genome1 to genome2. At least some of this is probably due to the way that the client seems to think it should have the first part of genome2 already buffered (because if you go far enough down in genome2 then you start getting the correct info)
