boinc's Issues

Connected to localhost(version)

Reported by romw on 17 Oct 37291354 00:00 UTC
Posted by: thegasgiant
Date: 4:46 AM 04-12-2005
Prior to BOINC V4.30, BOINC manager used to show, down the bottom left corner) the version number of the host it was connected to, i.e. Connected to localhost(4.27), but now it only says Connected to localhost. The version number in this note was useful to ensure that the manager had connected successfully to a host.

Posted by: thegasgiant
Date: 5:52 AM 04-12-2005
Doh..did I say bottom left? I meant bottom right corner.

Posted by: johnk
Date: 8:41 AM 04-12-2005
The version number was removed on purpose, allthough I also miss it. The problem here is that when connected to a remote host it flashes the proper host name and then returns to localhost.

Posted by: scott
Date: 4:04 PM 04-12-2005
If the version number was removed from the display, it needs to be added in elsewhere. There is no other way to determine what version of boinc a remote client is running, short of logging in to it. For those of us with lots of boinc clients, this is a critical feature.

Don't forget the benchmarks

Even though the current benchmarks work reasonably well in most circumstances they still have problems with HT processors.

This is just a reminder to get back to this after more important work is done.

BOINC Manager should be able to find it's localization files

Reported by romw on 18 Jul 37291334 04:00 UTC
The BOINC Manager only use the configured locale file when the 'locale' directory is a subdirectory of the current directory. This means

"cd /home/boinc ; ./boincmgr" is working
"cd /home ; ./boinc/boincmgr" is not working

Seems there is no work directory used for the localization.

differentiate between number of CPUs to use in idle and busy mode

Reported by KSMarksPsych on 12 Oct 37296831 05:46 UTC
Posted by:
Date: 3:05 PM 04-07-2007
BOINC detects if the machine is busy and can limit the number of CPUs to use. I'd like to see a feature, that I can define 2 numbers of CPUs to use, one if the machine is idle and one if the machine is busy. Right now I've got a dual processor machine and allow BOINC to use one of them so that my work is not slowed down. But when the machine is idle, BOINC could use both CPUs. Right now, this is not possible. With the advent of multi-processor/core machines spreading out to end users, this would allow more CPU power to be used by BOINC and the necessary preconditions are already implented.

upgrade script does not maintain correct download symlink

Reported by KSMarksPsych on 7 Nov 37296834 22:13 UTC

When I updated by boinc version with the upgrade script, the html/user/download symlink in the project directory pointed to non-existent test_project download directory instead of that for the project.

Would have saved me a lot of time figuring out why clients started getting http errors if this was created correctly.

Can't get 100[pct] CPU load on both CPUs

Reported by KSMarksPsych on 29 Jan 37296849 16:26 UTC
Posted by:
Date: 11:53 AM 02-20-2007
(This is version 5.4.11_i686-pc-linux-gnu, but the bug submission options don't include this version.)

I've set all my preferences the same on the various project Web pages, including 100% CPU and use-at-most 2CPUs, but I can't get more than 50% + 50% load, usually both on the same CPU which doesn't help much with cooling.

I run a command-line client with no manager. I've tried using BAM to set my options but it didn't help and I've disabled it. This is a dual-Opteron-246 box with 4GB memory, running Gentoo Linux with kernel 2.6.20. I installed my own i686 client; I'm not using the Gentoo ebuild because the client it creates can't fetch work for my platform - it just sits silently not doing anything. I'm currently attached to four projects: SETI, QMC, Climate Prediction and Einstein.

I fell into a nasty trap on the BOINC Web site, and innocently downloaded the latest recommended version. Only hours later, after no processing at all and after I'd dug through the .xml files in my boinc directory, did I find that I can't run that client because I'm behind a proxy. Downgrading again seemed to be accompanied with http problems still, so I removed the entire boinc directory and attached again to the four projects using the command line and my project keys. BOINC is now running, but it refuses to obey my settings. I'm doing my best to offer my (fairly substantial) computing resources to the community, but it's not easy.

I don't know which Component to select, so I've guessed at the scheduler.

Uploading results is not enough to get credit...
you have to report the result too.
I uploaded and detached from project and
had no idea that you also needed to report the result.. I bet there's lots of people not knowing this.
A autoReport(and autoUpload)feature when detaching from a project would be nice.

btw. I thought the update(report)-thing was something you did when you needed new WU:s

When installing boinc I always deselect the option to set Boinc as the default screensaver. Despite this, on Win95 and WinME Boinc is set as default screensaver.
This is true for all 4.2x Boinc versions.

Single user installation
do NOT set Binc as default screensaver
do start Boincmanager when logging on

Add a project backup function

Reported by KSMarksPsych on 1 Jun 37296620 04:00 UTC
Posted by:

A nice feature addition for some projects (CPDN currently) would be an automatic backup of the state of that project.

The project state would be backed up something like daily. If the workunit crashes then the backup copy would be moved back into the working spot and tried again before reporting a client error.

This would have to be set on a project by project basis, since there is little point to doing this for projects other than CPDN at this time.

Applies even if the user has Admin rights on the machine.

Surely configuring the service to use the local system account by default (when BOINC is installed) will solve this problem, and will enable the graphics by default

Add LTD and STD columns under Projects tab

It would be useful to have Long-term and Short-term Debt columns under the Projects tab in the Boinc Manager. This would eliminate the need for the user to open the client_state.xml file when verifying what projects should be running.

Three different CPIDs

v 4.30

Posted by: elst93

I've just read http://bbugs.axpr.net/bug.php?op=show&bugid=100&pos=0

And now I can say it still doesn't work.
I am attached to 7 different projects on one computer. I have 3 different CPIDs. I have waited for 4 weeks for the first 6 projects to allign themselves so they would show the correct CPID, they still don't.

I only re-attached to BURP yesterday, so I take that one out, even though it does allign with 3 other projects!

Einstein, Pirates, LHC and BURP use 4e83398c752b6740e877eb81d2c58fec

CPDN and a Pre Project use 9ef81b364343a718041688b10dabdaaa

Seti uses 6ed6ad1fad0bdf19678bd569997b3146

Seti was in the list with Einstein, Pirates, LHC and BURP yesterday, so it just changed CPID overnight.

Which makes me go crazy, since using CC4.30 I kinda like the Statistics tab. It works for all projects for the user, but it doesn't work for the Host! Then the Pre Project and Pirates show a flatline at the bottom.

Can you reproduce using the latest bits?

Several changes have been made in this area.

The balloon tooltip behaves oddly.

Reported by Didactylos on 1 Aug 37293287 12:00 UTC
(Windows only)
It actually behaves perfectly normally for a balloon message, but since it is being used to provide tooltip information, it behaves strangely. It doesn't appear when you mouseover, instead it pops up a second after you mouse out. It then hangs around (in the way) for several seconds or until you kill it.

Suggest it be replaced with a regular tooltip, and the balloons be saved for error conditions.

Wrap long messages

Reported by romw on 7 Sep 37291407 03:06 UTC
It would be nice if the messages were wrapped to fit the size of the message window in the manager. As it is now the servers sometimes send nice long detailed messages that cannot be read because they are off the screen.

Specifying a MySQL socket for BOINC server database?

Reported by KSMarksPsych on 24 Oct 37296549 03:06 UTC
Posted by:
Date: 2:01 PM 06-28-2005
For the project in question, the means by which the BOINC server software may connect to the MySQL software is a socket (which is different than the socket specified in /etc/my.cnf). Currently, there is no clear way to specify the use of this arbitrary socket during project setup. Currently, my fix is to change db_base.py:do_connect() and db_base.C:DB_CONN.open() to treat the database host parameter to accept these types of values:
"host", "host:port", and ":/path/to/socket" (the behind-the-scenes MySQL API does allow arbitrary hosts, ports, and sockets). However, this really isn't a permanent solution, and I would also prefer not to have to make those edits every time I ever update the BOINC software.

P.S. This is actually in the server-side distribution all the way up to 4.68.

Useabilty Issue (Stats Graphics)

Posted by:
Date: 6:59 AM 05-28-2005
I have find an issue. it cosmetic in nature not processing based but has other side effects.

The colour scheme for the stats page is not of a high enough contrast.

A colour blind person will not see a graph just to grey blocks.

If I can make a request that it may be nice to include a histogram as well as the line graph. I my self am visually handicapped. This would make graphs easier to read.

I am not saying make graphs black & white. (But you should think of the colour wheel when design informational graphics.)

One other issue I have noticed that the X axis can be display in a non linear way.

Automatic proxy configuration desired

Date: 4:00 PM 08-18-2005
For users who have to switch between networks with different proxies (or without proxies) an automatic proxy configuration would be nice.

It could work exactly like the automatic proxy configuration of web browsers like e.g. Firefox.

Of course two different scripts for both HTTP- and SOCKS-Proxy should be possible.

Posted by:
Date: 3:29 AM 11-26-2005
For Windows systems, this can be lifted directly from the registry. IE stores the proxy settings in HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet Settings in some values whose names start with "Proxy".

Posted by:
Date: 3:32 AM 11-26-2005
My bad, Bugzilla strips backslashes. Unixifying the registry key, it's "HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Internet Settings"

Posted by:
Date: 3:50 PM 01-03-2006
"For Windows systems, this can be lifted directly from the registry."
This is valid only for IE and should therefore not be used!
It would be a bad solution, anyway, to use other programs settings without asking the user.

Remove dependency on ATL framework for boinc.dll on Windows

Reported by romw on 12 Mar 37294126 19:06 UTC
The dependency on ATL causes build failures for those using Visual Studio Express 2005.

Originally I made the dependency with an eye towards needing access to COM objects, but it turns out that SENS isn't always reliable on all hosts for some reason and we have picked up any new dependency on COM in two years.

So lets remove it and expand our potential developer base to include those using Visual Studio Express.

With the debt function there is an issue with NOT using the SAME time value for calculations. The function should record the time value into a temporary variable and then use this value for calculations.

I've experienced a slow trend towards LTD (being calculated second) having NOT the same value even when setting all debt values back to zero.

Add News tab for news from all the projects

Reported by KSMarksPsych on 16 Sep 37296553 17:46 UTC
Posted by:
Date: 8:24 PM 06-28-2005
Idea: have a seperate tab in the Boinc GUI which holds all the updated news from the various projects their news pages/technical news. Downloaded to the harddrive in a text file.

There's just the problem with how to show it in a coherent way. Options: buttons on the side per project, or choosing the project in the Projects tab, the news will show accordingly.

It would probably be a sort of RSS feed, but then inside the Boinc GUI.

Another problem would be how to capture the news. Probably the wisest thing is to let it check the news pages once every time contact is made to the scheduler (dial-up) or at the same time that the automated scheduling check is made (always on connections).

In the event of new news, have it overwrite or add to the text file on the harddrive. In that case one could even think of a way to purge old news from the file once news is older than X days.

Something graphical (DX?) gets

Reported by KSMarksPsych on 6 Dec 37296596 18:40 UTC
Posted by:
Date: 4:30 AM 06-02-2005
After several weeks of trying to figure out a strange and annoying problem, I think I've tracked it down to BOINC. Basically, it seems that after my BOINC screen saver has been running, something seems to get "stuck" in memory that affects video playback codecs, or possibly DirectX (Not sure if that's even what BOINC uses on Win32). I can play video files fine before, but they're choppy after. Even if I suspend BOINC and CPU usage is minimal, videos still play choppy. I tried quite a few things to figure this out, but have discovered that if instead of suspending BOINC I exit it, the videos are fine again.

The videos play even while BOINC is running, and BOINC properly stops computing if I suspend it - CPU usage drops to nearly nothing. But once the screen saver has been running, somehow that seems to make videos choppy.

I know that's not much helpful information, but I'm not sure exactly what you might need. I'm happy to gather any info you need that might be useful - just let me know!

The processor cache humbers listed, especially for those processors with L2 cache of 2M or more seem to be carried as lower values.

Most systems with 1M cache seem to have 976.56 KB instead of 1M.

There may be additional difficulties ahead when the cache in the processor gains an additional level and we have L1, L2, and L3 cache.

Furthur note, the L2 and/or L3 cache may be shared between multiple (usually 2) virtual or physical processors.

It would be useful for the project to be able to do a graceful shut down.

Idea:

Have the project respond to an RPC with a message that indicates the project is permanently shutdown, and have the status of the project change in the UI to be something like "terminated" so that the user would know to disconnect from the project.

If we just have the project automatically disconnected, the users would be very puzzled as to why. I can see the complaints about the "bug" that disconnected my computers from project X.

This is going to affect the manager, the daemon, and the server. However I believe that most of the work will be in the daemon so I am putting it there.

Should we have this in place before Pirates shuts down? If they are planning on shutting down soon, this could be one last test that they do.

the default sort mode defined in most pages on most projects seems to be by RAC. However, some of us that are skeptical of RAC having any meaning at all, would prefer to have all the sorts done by Total Credit. Would it be possible to have a Site preference for that?

Unify all the configuration files into one configuration file

Currently log_flags.xml, remote_hosts.cfg, and gui_rpc_auth.cfg are all in seperate files.

Merge all the config files into one file which will store all configuration options.

Forum subscription sends multiple emails

The forum code should only send 1 email per unread thread.

----- Mail
Forum notification sends notifications multiple times even though the
user already knows that someone has posted to his registered thread (set
a timestamp in the notification registration table when sending email
and compare that to the last thread visited timestamp before sending
more emails about that thread, so that the user will only get new
notifications if he visits the thread after the first one - there's
functions for getting the last visit time to a thread)

Easy changing of the number of CPUs used

I would like to see a way (possibly a menu with options) from where the user can easily change the number of CPUs BOINC should use. Now the user has to exit BOINC, change the global prefs file and then restart BOINC. I think this will be useful for servers that are running BOINC - the user will be able to stop some of the CPUs for BOINC during the day and use all CPU power at night for example.

Changing this preference via the website is probably slightly easier than the procedure you are using. However I would also like to see a tab or something in the manager for changing settings locally and globally. The back end for that is there it just needs someone to program the interface for the manager.

Add another message priority

Could you please add another message priority for status/error messages such as:

Suspending computation and network activity - user is active

AND

... if this happens again you may need to reset the project

I would like to distinguish between manually / command driven suspension:
a. task suspended
b. BOINC client suspended
c. Preference / user busy suspended

No Stats in Statictics Tab

After installing v4.30 there are no stats coming up in the statistics tab. I have manually updated the projects (cpdn, ppah and sah) a couple of times, but still nothing. Is there a way to set this up? Am I missing something? Or doesn't it work just yet

I saw somewhere that it needs successful RPCs on 3 different days before the stats will appear.

It needs some kind of note there though. Maybe 'insuficient data, please check tomorrow' or something similar would be appropriate.

Doh...3 different days? Yes, a note on the download would be good. But I'll keep it in mind and see. Thanks.

Indeed, there needs to be notice there as to why nothing is there....

log files fill up

The server log files fill and do not seem to send a clear message to the administators that they need to be cleaned or given more room. When they log is full the project will report 'down for mantainence' and not respond to the users.

Logroatate can be used to cycle the logs if the server has the ability to close and repopen the log files.

Some servers respond to SIGHUP by closing and reopening the log files, freeing up the old ones to be rotated.
