monterail-fulldark's Introduction

Monterail Full Dark

Monterail Full Dark, a Thunderbird theme inspired by the mockup of Monterail

Another version: Monterail Dark

Thunderbird v68

WARNING: the last version is only compatible with Thunderbird 78.x

What is this?

This is a full theme for the Thunderbird e-mail client, inspired by Monterail mockup and by spymastermatt's dark theme. As opposed to the spymastermatt's version, this theme can be installed easily and quickly with an addon and it's compatible with Thunderbird 60.x and 78. The previously versions are compatible also with Thunderbird 68.

Installation

Manual (from source)

The first step is to download the theme, unzip the contents and re-create a zip only with the content of "monterail-fulldark" folder. Change the extension of the archive to ".xpi". An extensive guide for install the xpi file can be found here on the Mozilla support site, starting from "A slightly less ideal case". The Addon Manager can be found by clicking the menu icon menu (on the right, next to the search bar) followed by Add-ons and click on the Themes panel on the left.

Theme market (recommended procedure)

The theme can be directly downloaded from the Thunderbird Add-on market, the old version can be found by searching "Monterail Full Dark" directly in the add-on page of thunderbird or there, the new version can be found by searching "Monterail Full Dark 2.0 for TB>68" directly in the add-on page of thunderbird or there.

FAQ

  • Installation fail/Theme didn't change in Thunderbird 60
This seems a know issue of Thunderbird 60 [1] [2]. With this workaround it'll work:

    1. Go where your application data are stored, they usually can be found in:
    • Windows: C:\Users\[your windows user]\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\[(literally) random letters and numbers].default/
    • Linux: /home/[your linux user]/.thunderbird/[(literally) random letters and numbers].default/
    • MacOS: /home/[your macos user]/Library/Thunderbird/Profiles/[(literally) random letters and numbers].default/
    1. Go to the "extensions" folder, here there should be a file named "[email protected]"
    2. While Thunderbird is opened in background, delete the "[email protected]" file.
    3. Restart Thunderbird and reinstall the theme
    4. Restart Thunderbird again, the theme now should work
  • The original Monterail version will be released?

Nope, it already exists: Monterail by Paenglab.

  • This theme works with Windows/Linux/MacOS?

Yes. Currently the theme has been tested only on Windows 10 and openSUSE. You are free to open an issue here on GitHub if you find bugs.

  • With which versions of Thunderbird can I use this theme?

Version 1.1.6 works with Thunderbird <=60.x. Version 2.1 works only with Thunderbird 68. The last versions works with Thunderbird 78.

Credits

This addon is based on Monterail by Paenglab, source code is included.

Special thanks to spymastermatt for the work that he done to create the original dark theme.

monterail-fulldark's Issues

Installation on Thunderbird 68.2.1/Linux fails

Addon installation on Tunderbird 68.2.1 Linux (Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Desktop) fails, says it's not compatible with this version of thunderbird.

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Download 'monterail-fulldark-master.zip'
  2. Renamed it to 'monterail-fulldark-master.xpi'
  3. Install it using the manual addon 'install from file' procedure of Thunderbird
  4. See error on attached image
    Capture du 2019-11-27 10-49-54
Translation is 'This module could not be installed because it is not compatible with thunderbird 68.2.1'.

Expected behavior
According to you description, you updated the addon to be compatible with thunderbird 68 so I expected it to be installable.

Build information (please complete the following information):

  • OS: Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS
  • Version: 68.2.1 64bit

small issues on Lightning

Hi,

First, thanks for a great addon.

I use Thunderbird 60.0 on Fedora 28 64b, DE is Plasma 5.13.4

I think the addon could be improved by working on lightning, the contrast with too much. I would advise to work on the background of the calendar, and also the search bar.

Let met know if I can be useful! I have few skills in programming though.

Thanks and have a great day!

The Search tab that shows up when searching for mails is not themed both in Dark and FullDark.
Would it be possible to theme them as well?

All the best!

tag colors not applied

thanks for the new release https://github.com/conema/monterail-fulldark/releases/tag/2.0 !

I use it under Fedora 31 and with the thunderbird-package provided by the fedora repos.

Unfortunately I have to report back that for me the colors of tags aren't visible:

If I tag a message by pressing the respective number key, the message isn't displayed with the assigned color. The tag is attached, but no color.

This happens on both of my systems.

I don't have anything special "userChrome.css" as far as I know ...

pls advise, thanks

How can i change the background from white to grey? It should have the same grey color as next to it.

Is it possible to have a more compact view of the message list vertically? As it stands now it displays too few messages.
Can I get this result by inserting a piece of code in userchrome.css?
Thank you.

2.toolbar

first of all it's a great theme, especially since the new Version 1.1.4.
There is only one thing, the 2.toolbar ist still in white, that means you can't seen the text and hardly can seen the icons. Hope you are able to change this in the near future. Tks & brgds

Junk mail icon color still the same (junk or no-junk)

Hi everyone.

I'm not fluent in English so please excuse my potential language mistakes.

I've found a problem with junk mail icon in Monterail Full Dark theme :

2

As you can see on my screenshot, the junk mail icon stays the same, junk or no-junk.

And so, even if I :

  • click directly on it (next the mail's title)
  • click on "Junk" button
  • right click on the mail I want to mark as "junk"

Is it possible to fix this problem ?

Thank you a lot for your help.

Poor contrast in mail Header and locks in calendar tab

Hello again conema!!

Monterail full-dark is nearly perfect right now. :)
I just wanted to bring this to your attention.

monterail full dark

Would it be possible to put the "X more" test in the mail headers in white color instead of black?

And also the lock for read-only calendars in the calendar tab?

All the best!

Some elements not showing light blue accent colour

Some elements not showing light blue accent colour. The current folder in the folder's pane shows only a dark grey highlight on the selected folder as opposed to the light blue accent colour shown in the screenshots in this repo. Also, the calendar does not highlight the today's date any longer. I am using Thunderbird 68.7.0 (64-bit) and a fresh install.

Calendars should be full dark

We need to edit the css of calendars to meet theme's style, they should be full dark.
For the moment, calendars are like this:

Highlights messages according to tag colour

Apologies but I've got one more question: I used TT DeepDark before switching to your theme (as the former is not compatible any longer), and that theme highlighted the messages according to their tag colours. So if a message was tagged as important, selecting it in the message list would highlight it red. With multiple tags, the first tag is the one that was used. If the message had no tags, the theme accent colour was used. Would it be possible to implement this behaviour?

Ugly button on Linux

On Linux some button have a really bad looking background, they should have the same background color as Windows:

Darken blue bars in the calendar tab

Hey,
the darkmode is nearly perfect and I really like the look & feel.
There is one little thing which could be improved. There are blue bars in the calendar tab which do not fit in the darkmode.

grafik

Is it possible to change this?
Thank you!

Not working

I installed this theme on thunderbird 68.3.0-1 but it seems like it is not working. Absolutely nothing is changed after installing it... I zipped the contents of the repo to an .xpi, dragged to the addons page and it installed. I have the entry "Monterail Full-Dark" in the extensions page. Yet, nothing is changed.

Any idea what is happening?

EDIT: I tried dragging and dropping to the "Themes" page, instead of the "Extensions" page, but the end result is exactly the same.

Question

Can someone tell me how to change only icons in thunderbird?
Sorry, i didn't know where to write this question

no issue, just thanks

Just a quick thanks for your work and improvements, I really appreciate it. Is it enough to update the theme via the "internal addon update" or do I have to install/update somehow manually to keep up to date with this project?

Install question

I found the info not fully clear.
To use the theme I assume it has to be installed ín the normal way. Then the packaged named "thunderbird-monterail-master.zip" should be extracted, re-named to chrome and placed in the Thunderbird folder.

Are there any other settings, apart from selecting the theme in the Thunderbird Add-on section?
I ask because changes I did in the userChrome.css. The theme starts up ok.

Change mail list text color

Hi everyone.

First, I have to say that I'm not fluent in English so please excuse my potential language mistakes.
I'll try to do my best !

Here is my question :

I would like to change the mail list text color of the theme Monterail Full Dark.

I am able to change the mail list background color in root.css (I changed the dark grey color for a white color) but I can not find the line for the mail list text color (I would like to replace it with a dark color because now, I can not read the text...)

Can you help me ?

I joined a screenshot to show my problem.

Thank you a lot for your help.

Address Book Menu Toolbar using "Light" Colorscheme

Describe the bug
The Toolbar colors in the Address Book appear to still be using a light theme for the background/button colors, but with white text. This appears to be the case on all default themes, and is only occurring with monterail-fulldark enabled.

At the time of writing, I've tested the version available on the Thunderbird Addons repository, release 2.1 from this github repository, as well as the current master branch from this repository.

To Reproduce (if applicable)
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Go to "Address Book" from the main GUI

Expected behavior
At work, on a similarly setup machine, the Address Book looks and works as expected, though perhaps I'm missing the latest update on that machine?

Additional Addons not related to this project

Additional context
I've also tested with only Monterail-FullDark enabled, and all other addons disabled, and see the same results. Many of the above addons are new additions for me, so at first I was initially under the impression that something was conflicting...however, I'm not seeing this anywhere else in the UI, so it was a little odd to me for that to be the case. Nevertheless, disabling everything else results in the same issue.

Change color of Draft/Send/Junk/Trash icons ?

I'm not fluent in English so please excuse my potential language mistakes.

I would like to change the color of :

  • "Send" icon
  • "Junk" icon
  • "Trash" icon

Thank you a lot for your help !

Light grey color on the Mail Toolbar...

Can the light grey color on the Mail Toolbar and the light grey color when composing a new message be changed to a darker color? Such as, the dark color in the built-in dark theme (see screenshots). Thanks.

Weird color of cited plain text

Describe the bug
By default, replying to message in plain text mode displays cited text in blue on the dark gray background and nearly completely unreadable.

To Reproduce (if applicable)
Reply to message without HTML editor.

Expected behavior
It is better to change text color to something like gray or so. I'm not sure where to put it in this plugin, but in TB it is located in the html.css(168) file:

`span[_moz_quote=true] {
color: blue;
}

pre[_moz_quote=true] {
color: blue;
}
`
Editing it here (by replacing blue to gray) gives perfect results, but obviously conflicts with updates.

replies :: color of quoted text

At first: thanks for the great theme, I really love it and use it for years(?) now ;-)

What I don't get:

when I reply to an email (= a draft is opened) the colors aren't ideal IMO

the quoted text is in blue, the background is a dark grey and the contrast between the two could be better ... it's hard to read the quoted text and stressful on my eyes.

I am not sure where and how to change that, I played with various settings, toggled system colors etc etc

Maybe this is part of the theme or not, I am quite confident that you guys can point me at the right place to improve that.

thanks, Stefan

ps: will attach screenshot if requested

Lightning colors messy with Dark theme

Running Thunderbird on Manjaro KDE, with Kvantum and Arc-Dark theme.

I installed the monterrail set of themes, which really is great (fully recommend, gives thunderbird a much more modern look). I only have problems in the lightning extension

image

As you can see in this screenshot, calendar colors are quite messy. The biggest problems are the date selection tools, which are white-text over white background. Not really ideal.

I couldn't figure out how to change this in my UserChrome.css file. Does anybody have an idea?

Hard to see Unread emails

It would be better (imo) if there was an higher contrast between read and unread e-mails. As it is, I have some trouble in differentiating read and unread e-mails. Perhaps a different foreground color?

There is the green read-icon thingie, but something feels wrong. Maybe it's just that I am not used to thunderbird.

EDIT: Would it be possible to change the size of the green circle for unread items?

Not Compatible with 60.3.0 :(

I'm sure you will be hearing from others, but the Monterail Full Dark theme is no longer compatible with Thunderbird 60.3.0. Also, when I tried the trick you described for earlier version issues, I was unable to delete the [email protected] file with Thunderbird running in the background because I got the error message that it was being used and couldn't be deleted.

Hopefully you will be able to update the theme for the new version because it is great!

Thanks!

Replace brighter grey panels with dark colour

Hi, I really like your full dark theme but I am not a big fan of the brighter grey colour that is used in some elements. An example of this is the window for writing a new email. Currently it looks like this:

Is there an easy way of making them look like this?:

The same is true for the top panel in both the email and calendar:

I'll glady help with this, but so far I've been unable to find any documentation from Mozilla on how themes work past 60, nor have I found any themes that do anything beyond add a picture behind the tab bar.

I love this theme but I'm using Mailspring, an other open source mail client.
There is any hope that you'll make it for Mailspring too?
