So, I have explored two options:

  1. shinyFiles::shinyFilesButton() allows to select one or more local files, which is pretty much exactly what is needed. However, the file browser's access is limited to a prespecified location on the user's hard drive (for security reasons in web application contexts). This makes it difficult to use for citr purposes.
  2. fileInput() allows to "upload" files (in parctice I was unable to upload multiple files in RStudio). This poses a challenge to the caching approach for bibliographies that I have chosen.

Both options seem suboptimal. I introduced it as a quick fix to deal with documents consisting of a master and several included children. Since I'll be solving this with a different approach discussed in #7, I'll abandon this for now since manual specification is a fall back anyway.

from citr.
