Vietnamese students often ask about scholarships to study in the US. Explain to them what GRA/GTA are and share your experiences.

List what you think are important to get accepted. Discuss about things such as research/job experiences, background, etc. Did you have to study for GRE, English-standard tests etc?

I want to add two more professors in AI/ML that weren't mentioned:

It is a great idea to keep in touch and reach out to those who are close to you during the holidays. A simple way to do this is by sending an email, for example during the Christmas - New year break, you can write something like "Dear X, just want to say hello and wish you a happy holiday season." You can also be more specific, e.g., if they are French or Argentine, say something about World Cup🙂.

Also pay attention to how they respond to your message. If they follow up with questions and such, then do reply. If they just say thank you and happy holiday, then don't reply.

In short, don't be shy and reach out to old teachers, mentors, friends, etc.

• Unlike other counties, a PhD in CS in the US typically takes 5-7 years.

A common question is: I graduate with a BS or MS from a university X with high grade Y (or high ranking Z). Do I have a chance of applying for Ph.D. ?

A: it is difficult to answer this. But most likely is that your chance will be low if the main attraction from your application is grade. Ph.D. is all about research and so you will have much better chance with good research experience (e.g., publications).
