vscode-loc's Introduction

Visual Studio Code Language Packs

Visual Studio Code is localized into many different languages using the concept of Language Packs. Language Packs can be installed by running the >Configure Display Language command in Visual Studio Code's Command Palette or installed via the Visual Studio Code Marketplace.

The original English strings can be found in the source code of the open source repository and the localized strings for supported languages can be found in this repository.

Localized resource files are managed and edited by Microsoft. Files will be exported to this repository when strings are updated to prepare for the publishing of language pack.

There are currently 14 supported languages for Visual Studio Code.

Contributing

If you want to give feedback or report an issue with a translation, please create a new GitHub issue. Please check if a topic about your issue already exists! Translation strings are managed on the Microsoft Localization Platform, and changes to strings can only be made there. Consequently, pull requests fixing translations won't be accepted. All other PRs to things like README.md, package.json, etc. will be accepted at the discretion of the maintainers.

Legal

Before we can accept your pull request you will need to sign a Contribution License Agreement. All you need to do is to submit a pull request, then the PR will get appropriately labelled (e.g. cla-required, cla-norequired, cla-signed, cla-already-signed). If you already signed the agreement we will continue with reviewing the PR, otherwise system will tell you how you can sign the CLA. Once you sign the CLA all future PR's will be labeled as cla-signed.

What is the function &&?

I would like to help with the translation, but I noticed that in several places of the code there is "&&" in the middle of the words. I wonder if it's mandatory or can I just leave the words?

Example original code:

"actions.clipboard.cutLabel": "Recortar",
"miCut": "Cu&&t",
"actions.clipboard.copyLabel": "Copiar",
"miCopy": "&&Copiar",
"actions.clipboard.pasteLabel": "Colar",
"miPaste": "&&Colar",

Changing to:

"actions.clipboard.cutLabel": "Recortar",
"miCut": "Recortar",
"actions.clipboard.copyLabel": "Copiar",
"miCopy": "Copiar",
"actions.clipboard.pasteLabel": "Colar",
"miPaste": "Colar",

Wrong Japanese translation of "deleteAllLeft"

Issue Type: Bug

The Japanese translation of deleteAllLeft in Keyboard Shortcuts is "残りをすべて削除する", which literally means "delete everything that remains," a clear mistranslation of the word "left." For consistency with deleteAllRight ("右側をすべて削除"), this should be "左側をすべて削除".

Translate telemetry opt-out related strings as soon as possible

@danyeh The strings telemetryOptOut.optOutOption, telemetryOptOut.OptOut and telemetryOptOut.OptIn are translated only in 6 locales at the moment. Is there any way to ensure they get translated in the rest and the corresponding extensions get updated in the next few days?

We want to enable an experiment which we can do only when these strings are localized in all the locales.

Suggestion: sort content of *.i18n.json files

The diff of a *.i18n.json file in a commit is not all about translation changes, sometimes it's just some objects inside contents object changing their positions.
I'd love to see translation changes more clearly, please sort the content of those files.

MLCP localization problem

I've tried to continue to localize VS Code to Hungarian on the new MLCP site. I got over the fact that this platform is sub par in every possible aspect as a localization tool compared to Transifex: no easy way to view already localized strings, search for text and expressions in the full localized and non-localized sources, no sub groups, no information about who the translation comes from, and no information about which source file this text comes from exactly (which helped me many times when it was not clear what the expression exactly meant from the entry itself). These in themselves makes localization hard, and "community" localization more harder. It looks like that translating JSON files would be more productive than using the site itself 😞.

However the current problem I face looks like a full showstopper. It seems that I cannot add a suggestion to a text which already has a suggestion:
firefox_2019-02-15_15-17-47
When I try to add it, a suggestion the button is disabled. Only one suggestion is allowed per entry? If so, I cannot continue to localize VS Code as the Hungarian language is full of sub par and wrong suggestions. (For example the entry in the screenshot makes no sense and does not use the already established translation for Activity Bar used everywhere.) Asking to remove every suggestion via GitHub issues would be very time consuming and it would remove the joy of the translation ifself...

Add beautiful Icons for all extended languages

Issue Type: Feature Request

Now we don't have icons for language extensions, it's a default empty icon:
noicon
Compared with other plug-in extensions, they have a nice icon to identity themselves:
normalicons
So, the request is very easy——Would you mind doing designs of icons for all extended languages (Take Simplified Chinese as an example but for all)?

Suggestion: The icon can be the name of shortened language names, for Chinese it would be zh-cn, for traditional Chinese, it should be zh-tn. Something like that (Maybe the background color can be also different):

To simplify this, we can use icon generator to generate languages batchly (like what avatars are seen in https://forums.asp.net/).

[ja] "no open repo" is mistranslated into "ソース管理プロバイダーが登録されていません。"

The following strings should be "フォルダーやワークスペースが開かれていません。"

Original: "ソース管理プロバイダーが登録されていません。" means that "Any Prividers are registered".
Proposal: "フォルダーやワークスペースが開かれていません。" means that "No Folders or workspaces hasn't opened yet".

[ja] orthographical variants

「ターミナル」「端末」 (original: terminal) have the same meaning, but different written forms.
I would recommend 「ターミナル」. Because "Integrated Terminal" is known as 「統合ターミナル」.

Custom en-GB Language Pack is not used

After following the instructions here on how to build and install a language pack VSIX into the Insiders VS Code, I find that the translations are not actually used.

I had a suspicion that the problem was that I am creating a en-* language pack and that Code was deciding to take the en-US (or just en) strings instead.

See https://github.com/Microsoft/vscode/blob/5dc414c/src/main.js#L267

// Check if we have an English locale. If so fall to default since that is our
// English translation (we don't ship *.nls.en.json files)
if (locale && (locale == 'en' || locale.startsWith('en-'))) {
	return Promise.resolve({ locale: locale, availableLanguages: {} });
}

Looks like because 'en-GB'.startsWith('en-') the 'NLS' file (?) is not being generated, hence the UK strings are not being used.

I tried changing the ID of the language pack to zz and that did work correctly, confirming my suspicion.

This issue might be better raised in the vscode repository rather than here in vscode-loc?

不一致翻譯:延伸模組 vs 擴充功能

在繁體中文版中,「extension」這個字有兩種翻法存在:「延伸模組」和「擴充功能」,前者出現超過 250 次而後者超過 100 次。我個人認為兩種翻譯都可以接受,但是建議統一使用其中一種,不要混用。

Turkish and Portuguese (Brazil) Language Packs do not work

I installed Turkish and Portuguese (Brazil) Language Packs. Enabled them by editing locale.json but UI language is still English. Bulgarian and Hungarian Language Packs work but these two does not.

I changed "languageId": "tr" to "languageId": "trk" in Turkish Language Pack's package.json file. Then activate it as "locale": "trk" in locale.json and it worked.

Also changed "languageId": "pt-BR" to "languageId": "pt-br" in Portuguese (Brazil) Language Pack's package.json file. Then activate it as "locale": "pt-br" in locale.json and it worked too.

There might be a confusion about language ids.

Ну что за дела! Предложение:

Не лучше для каждого языка сделать описание на этом же языке, лучше/удобнее/круче! Заходишь на страницу расширения "Russian Language Pack for Visual Studio Code", а там описание на английском, шик! 🙄

[german/de] Misleading translation: 'Not enough space to split terminal'

The notification hint 'Not enough space to split terminal.' is translated in german with "Nicht genügend Speicherplatz zum Aufteilen des Terminals vorhanden.".

The term "Speicherplatz" is not correct here. The hint want to suggest the user should resize his vs code window to have more space for the terminal. Instead the german reader understands, he would need more memory (RAM) in order to split his terminal.

I would simply suggest the term "Platz" or "Bildschirmbreite".

To reproduce this hint:

  • have terminal view open
  • from the menu > Terminal > Split Terminal [de: "Terminal teilen"]
