babel's Introduction

Default Lexicon

Babel

The easy way for your multilingual site!

Features

Babel is an Extra for MODx Revolution that helps you to manage your multilingual websites using different contexts. Babel even supports managing several different multilingual websites within one MODx instance by using so-called context groups.

Babel maintains links between translated resources. In the manager you can use the Babel Box to easily switch between the different language versions of your resources. Translations can be created automatically by Babel or defined manually.

Additionally, Babel can be used to synchronize certain template variables (TVs) of translated resources which should be the same in every context (language).

Installation

MODX Package Management

Usage

Install via package manager and fill the system setting babel.contextKeys with a comma separated list of context keys which should be used to link multilingual resources.

Documentation

For more information please read the documentation.

License

The project is licensed under the GPLv2 license.

Translations

Translations of the package can be made for the Default Lexicon, the Permissions Lexicon, the Properties Lexicon and the System Settings Lexicon

babel's Issues

Package not available via Extras at modxcms.com

Hi,

package is currently not available in extra's section of modxcms.com.
I'm not sure wether it is a problem of the website but would be good to have it added (maybe both, 2.0.0b and 2.1.0b to ensure updates via package management).

bad lexicon key

In the default.inc.php you've got the key $_lang['babel.create_translation'] while the backend-end looks babel.create_translations (plural)

Don´t show default language in domain name

Hello Mikrobi

Is there any solution for this little problem?

Let´s say that i have two website translations: default is EN and the second translation is PT.
Is it possible instead of having www.mysites.com/en/ have this www.mysite.com/. Ah, this situation happens in a "folder by translation" situation.

Many thanks in advance

P.S - Great plugin, by the way... ;)

alias confused with culture_key

I have a site in 3 contexts: web, french (culture key: fr) and german (culture key: de). In the web (english) context, I have some alias that begin with "de" (ex: demand.html).

The problem is the following: Babel only takes the first 2 letters after the sitename and transfers it to its culture key, so when I load www.site.com/demand.html, it considers it as www.site.com/de/mand.html, therefore directing me to a 404 page.

This should not be happening. Babel is a great tool and I'm glad that I found it, I just hope that this gets fixed quickly!

Thanks.

make Snippet Linktext changeable

Would be great to can change the text of the Frontend Snippet language strings.
Currently (as I far as I know) the only option is to change the names for the backend in lexicon?

[feature request] set default_template valeu when psuh create transration button in manager

hi. thank you for grate plugin.

this is feature request.

I have 4 mulit langage site. I made a mistake in the setup of template id ,because Set current template id for new page when psuh "create transration" button in manager

I hope set default_template value in context_setting when psuh "create transration" button in manager.

for exsample in (bable.class.php in duplicateResource() )

$newResource->set('publishedby',0);
$newResource->set('context_key', $contextKey);
// addcode start
$context_setting = $this->modx->getObject('modContextSetting', array(
'context_key' => $contextKey,
'key' => 'default_template',
));
$default_template= $context_setting->get('value');

if(!empty($default_template)){
    $newResource->set('template', $default_template);
}
// add code  end
thanks.

Babel 225 Styling - covers resource tabs page settings, template variables etc

Hi Guys,
The babel languages in the resource section cover all the page setting tabs eg create/edit document, page settings, templa variables. I have 10 languages in and they span the width of the page blocking tabs. Can you recommend the fix. Using Modx Revo 213
Thanks

cultureKey settings

First of all, great component you have made for MODx Revolution, it works very well..

I found a little issue with the cultureKey. This one is used to get the right visible text on the language buttons above the document-forms. The second/third.. added context with an other cultureKey works fine, but the default (web) context doesn't show the right label.

In system settings I changed the cultureKey to 'nl' (Dutch) and still the text "English (web)" is showing. I was need to add the cultureKey specific to the context. Maybe a little fix but it looks me a good one :-)

Keep up the good work!

(bug) Unable to manually link translation.

When editing a resource that is not yet linked, I'm trying to manually add a link.

But, when hovering over the input form field, the hover window closes, so I'm not able of typing in the resource that is the linked equivalent...

This is on Windows 7, Chrome 9, Babel 2.2.3rc1.

Having more than one multilangual website.

context1 = web(en)
context2 = web(de)

[feature request] maintenance notice for untranslated, published resources

Hi,

I don't know how much effort this is but it would be a cool feature:

If you create a translation normally the ressource is unpublished. If I have a site semi-translated and I want to publish it but want to have a notice for the reader, this could be output by a snippet code?
What do you mean, does it make sense to you?

url not working -> starting a loop ?

Hi,

I configured everything for the SEO Approch. But not all the url are working...

  • My site is now in a local machine inside a directory : www\mysite\
  • Two languages : fr (context web), de (context de)

http://localhost/mysite/ -> redirecting to http://localhost/mysite/fr/ but after message : "The page is not redirecting properly"
http://localhost/mysite/fr/ -> not working with message "The page is not redirecting properly"
http://localhost/mysite/fr/index.php -> working well
http://localhost/mysite/index.php -> working well
http://localhost/mysite/de/index.php -> 503 Error Page not found

BabelTranslation - contextKey default

When using a lot of multilanguage chunks it might be a help to set &contextKey default to [[++cultureKey]]. I have no idea how to set this in snippet properties. Any idea?

BabelTranslation - no output.

Using BabelTranslation, there is no output in the front-end.

I'm trying for example
[[BabelTranslation? &resourceId=12&contextKey=[[++cultureKey]]]]
as well tried different syntax and in Wayfinder, but it doesn't work.

Please let me know what could be wrong.

Thanks!

Group resource

While creating a translation, group resources aren't kept.

In my process, if the original resource is inside a group resource, the translations should also be in that group resource.
But does everyone need that (no concrete idea where this wouldn't be needed came to my mind)?

Checkbox TV sync

Syncing a single checkbox TV (input options: " ==1") works only in one way
Once checked, the value (1) is synced. If i un-check, the value (well, no value) isn't synced.
That may be of an improper usage of checkbox TVs on my side…

Flexibility in .htaccess rules

Hello, I've been having some issues with the .htaccess rules imposed by babel when working with other addons and I believe this could be avoided perhaps with more flexible rewrite rules or documentation which contemplate how to work around issues like the one I am having.

In specific I have issues with the Gmaps plugin at: http://modx.com/extras/package/gmaps

Basically the links within the maps are returning 404's because of the rewrite rules currently in place as required by babel. Here are my rewrite rules currently:

# detect language when requesting the root (/)
RewriteCond %{HTTP:Accept-Language} !^(en|es) [NC]
RewriteRule ^$ en/ [R=301,L]
RewriteRule ^$ es/ [R=301,L]

# Rewrite www.domain.com -> domain.com -- used with SEO Strict URLs plugin
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} .
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^website\.com [NC]
RewriteRule (.*) http://website.com/$1 [R=301,L]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(es|en)/favicon.ico$ favicon.ico [L,QSA]

# redirect all requests to /de/assets* and /nl/assets* to /assets*
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^(es|en)/assets(.*)$ assets$2 [L,QSA]

# redirect all other requests to /de/* and /nl/* to index.php and set the cultureKey parameter
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(es|en)?/?(.*)$ index.php?cultureKey=$1&q=$2 [L,QSA]

coroico from the modx forums was kind enough to help me troubleshoot the issue, he is the author of the gmaps addon. He pointed our the following:

When I write : http://urbeconstrucciones.com/index.php?id=50
I get: http://urbeconstrucciones.com/es/ajaxinfobox.txt which is correct

But when I write : http://urbeconstrucciones.com/index.php?id=50&mkrid=7
I get : http://urbeconstrucciones.com/es/ajaxinfobox.txt which is not correct
I awaited http://urbeconstrucciones.com/es/ajaxinfobox.txt?mkrid=7

I don't know why, but the mkrid parameter is lost when the rules of the htaccess are applied

The sample page I setup to try this out is at:

http://urbeconstrucciones.com/es/proyectos/proyectos-en-planos/torre-vulcana.html

You will see some marked places within the map, when you hover over them, the infobox pops up with the 404 error instead of the correct document as configured.

I appreciate any direction.

Thanks.

Handle subfolder based translations [feature]

I'm hoping to open up some discussion regarding taking Babel to 2.3 as discussed at the end of this article:
http://www.multilingual-modx.com/blog/2011/seo-friendly-multilingual-websites-with-modx-and-babel.html

I'm developing a network of sites all managed within one MODX install, with languages to be handled both via Context switching for single-language domains (such as domain.nl), and subfolder switching within a single Context for multi-language domains (such as domain.com/en, domain.com/fr). For this case, Contexts represent unique domains.

I'm about to to modify Babel to achieve this myself as I need the functionality for a current project. It would however be great if what I do moves in the same direction as what you intend to implement for 2.3, and of course any code I generate may be used as a contribution to Babel. Could we share ideas on how you were planning to move this forward?

If you would prefer to continue this discussion on the MODX forums or elsewhere, just let me know.

Cheers

Luke

BabelLinks don't show all translations

I got weird problem with Babel. It show both possible languages in one context and only one in another. My testing site (there is 2 :
http://ru.msu-geophysics.ru/ (only one link)
http://en.msu-geophysics.ru/ (both links)
modx revo 2.0.6tr (clean installation, only Babel there), web and en contexts with ru and en cultureKeys (also there are site_url, base_url an site_start set for contexts).
By the way, as you see, BabelTranslation shows all IDs in both cases.
By the way Babel is great and I'll use it for all my future projects.

maybe it's to Babel: endless saving

After creating a translation via Babel (git-latest) saving of a resource is endless in all contexts.
When creating a resource without Babel it doesn't appear.

think it does have to do with the panel of babel in manager.

Synchronizing resources automatically

Is there a way to automatically synchronize resources from a specific parent to multiple contexts?

It would be very useful if there are parts of a site that should appear in all translations, but only in one language.

some trouble with new translations in tree

Hi,

I've got some trouble with directories of new translations and their parents in translated context…
My web context has a structure like this:

  • home

-- blog

--- 2011

---- entry

Same on english context but if I create a new translation in web context Babel creates a new ressource in 'home' base of root not in the exspected subfolder.
Any thoughts?

parseBabelTv() is undefined

I'm using Babel 2.1.1-rc1.

When I attempt to create a translation of a resource by clicking on the "create translation" button, a php error occurs and the operation fails:

Fatal error: Call to undefined method Babel::parseBabelTv() in /.../public_html/core/components/babel/model/babel/babel.class.php on line 122

I've searched the entire "core/components/babel" folder and cannot find any definition of a parseBabelTv function.

Emptying the MODX trash can corrupt values in modx_site_tmplvar_contentvalues

Please see here for full details:
http://forums.modx.com/thread/76315/data-going-missing-in-modx-site-tmplvar-contentvalues

In particular, please read the 5th post for a partial (but not perfect) fix:
http://forums.modx.com/thread/76315/data-going-missing-in-modx-site-tmplvar-contentvalues#dis-post-422404

In short, the removeLanguageLinksToResource function is not careful enough when it updates the values of modx_site_tmplvar_contentvalues.

The following line of code can potentially retrieve any rows from modx_site_tmplvar_contentvalues including Date TV's or standard Text TV's which happen to contain a number matching $resourceId:
$templateVarResources = $this->modx->getCollection('modTemplateVarResource', array('value:LIKE' => '%:'.$resourceId.'%'));

Even if this function was limited to only operate on values belonging to Babel's TV, there is still the issue that $resourceid must exactly match the values found.

For example: removeLanguageLinksToResource(38) would update all four of these modx_site_tmplvar_contentvalues values (below), even those the last two do not relate to doc 38.

On duplicate context.. keep tracking on translation

I'm missing an important feature. I know MODx also must add a new event, but maybe you could think about this;

When I have the idea to create a multi-language site, I use Babel, but when I have setupped my first context, created a lot of pages... I want to duplicate my context to the new context/language. But then Babel is missing the ID's of resources wich are duplicated.

As I said; MODx also needs to add an event to invoke at the context duplicate for each resource to duplicate. But maybe you can already create your own event and add this to the context duplicate processor of the core to create a plugin wich keeps tracking on the duplicated resources?

I'm working on it and have the following added to the modx processor, after the $newResource->save(); (btw. I'm using 2.0.8 in this project)

$modx->invokeEvent('OnContextDuplicateResource',array(
    'newContext' => &$newKey,
    'newResource' => &$newResource,
    'oldContext' => &$oldKey,
    'oldResource' => &$oldResource,
));

I had to add the event name "OnContextDuplicateResource" and create a plugin hooked on this. Now my plugin is fired each time a resource is duplicated.

So I have the ability to update the Babel TV value (don't know how at the moment, I'm diving in the Babel code)

Create Translation redirect gives error

The Create Translation button on a resource gives an error (at least in Chrome), because in the HTTP Location header there is an HTML encoded ampersand.

It's line 172 in the plugin:
$url = $modx->getOption('manager_url',null,MODX_MANAGER_URL).'?a='.$actions['resource/update'].'&id='.$newResource->get('id');

should be:
$url = $modx->getOption('manager_url',null,MODX_MANAGER_URL).'?a='.$actions['resource/update'].'&id='.$newResource->get('id');

Redesign language switch buttons [feature]

Hi Jacob,

first this component is a great extension for modx and I appreciate your work!

Here is one little thing that may should be changed in future versions.

I'm currently creating a heavy multi language site with about 26 different languages.
The buttons for switching between the different languages in the resource take to much space.

http://twitpic.com/4flj00

What about some smaller image buttons that display the flag of the language?

greetings

Kristian

Babel & Wayfinder's startId is not working

Hi,

I'm creating a website in 3 different languages following the instructions from:
http://www.multilingual-modx.com/blog/2011/seo-friendly-multilingual-websites-with-modx-and-babel.html

I need to use Wayfinder with a specific starId=2 which needs to be translated into an other ID depending on the other language's contexts. For example:

German: ID 2 (leading)
English: ID 58
Spanish: ID 59.

I assume I can use Babel.BabelTranslation in order to get the needed ID for every language, so my Wayfinder set up is:
[[!Wayfinder? &startId=[[BabelTranslation? &contextKey=de&resourceId=2]]]]

But sadly is not working because I get the root ID: 0 and wayfinder displays all the root documents on my navigation which is not what I need.

Maybe this is not really an issue with babel but the way I'm using it, so any feed back will be appreciated.

Using Simple Search with Babel

Hi, Babel works great, but I need to use Simple Search as well.
I use the following call:

[[!SimpleSearchForm? &landing=12]]

12 is the ID of my English search results page....
But now all searches from all languages go to the English page. How can I get a variable results page link depending on the current language?

[Solved] Updated to MODX 2.1.3-pl sub languages get 404 page not found.

When updated from 2.1.0-rc4 to 2.1.3-pl only the main language is visible, sub languages get 404 page not found.

When you login the manager the sub languages are visible on the front-end, when logout the sub languages get 404 page not found again.

Babel worked well with 2.1.0-rc4 after update to 2.1.3-pl it stopped working.

Update: Got Babel working again, somehow new Context Access Permission where needed after update to 2.1.3

SyncTvs of TV Resources

If the template variable is a Resource Id itself, I think that the syncTvs should work this way (TVR = Template Variable Resource):

  • Check if there is a translation of the TVR on the context we are translating to:
    • If exists, then the syncTvs should save the TVR translated id,
    • If doesn't exists, the syncTvs simply saves the original TVR.

Does it make sense?

undefined method parseBabelTv()

Hi, when you create a babel link in a resource which has a parent, the page die ( Fatal error: Call to undefined method Babel::parseBabelTv() in /home/www/dfc51df98f96043989c597d7a722796c/web/core/components/babel/model/babel/babel.class.php on line 122 )

UI: new translation handling

When creating a new translation I've been redirected to the original resource, not the new translation. This is not the expected behaviour...

Error babel.class.php when quick updating a resource

When I do a quick update of any resource on any page in the manager I get an error in the babel.class.php file.

Fatal error: Call to a member function get() on a non-object in /path/to/modx/core/components/babel/model/babel/babel.class.php on line 268

The resource is saved but the saving window don't disappear. I use version 2.2.4-pl

Scrolling issue in the manager

The content area in the manager is pushed down by the height of the "#babel-box" which prevents me from scrolling down to the end of the page. Maybe the "#babel-box" should be appended to the beginning of the "#modx-panel-resource" dom node? In this case it would be within the scrollable area.

Thanks for this nice plugin.

Idea: redirect based on browser-language

I was thinking about a nice feature? It's maybe nice to create a sort of redirector plugin wich checks the browser language of the visitor and redirects them to the right context-site-url. In my case I have an "nl.domain.com" and "en.domain.com". Wen someone comes trough "www.domain.com" or just "domain.com", it would be nice if they redirects to the right part.

When a language is unknown in the contexts, just redirect to the first/default context.

untranslated ressources handling

Could you implement a custom error page (or error message as modal window) attribute for the DisplayLinks snippet?
If a ressource has no translation and the user clicks to other language link he's now redirected to the start_page but should to [[~untranslatederrorpage_id]].

And it would be great to have a link set to link back to the default language ressource.

Better context key values on Apache modx_userdir

For example I have 3 languages/contexts

web = NL
de
en

I have setupped babel with subfolders like http://www.domain.com/en/ or ../de/ and that is working fine.

Only for local development we're using apache mod-userdir to have a public_html for every user on the local development machine. You get url's like http://local-machine/~user1/ and ../~user2/.. For example: http://local-machine/~user/Example.com/ and then you get ../Example.com/de/ and ../en/. Wich is working fine.

Only when working with multiple users there are some issues with the context settings done for each context. The context settings like "site_url" and "base_url" are set to user1 and so user2 cant see his local version.

To make this working would be great to add something like {base_url} inside the site_url setting. So for example: "{base_url}de/". This looks like it's working only the for the web context, and only when loaded as first. When you load "de/" first, then the "en/" link will be "de/en/" ...

I hope you understand and maybe we can get this working?

[Idea] Append parameters of current page

Hi there,

We recently ran into a small problem with babel, and had to integrate this little hack to is, so it would work for our scenario:

One page of our website is basically just a pull-page, which dynamically shows content trough parameters passed via PHP GET. This page is avaliable in german and english, so linked both of them. Problem is, when the babel link is generated, the appended GET parameters are lost, and the page shows junk.

So, we created a nifty hack that appends the GET parameters of the CURRENT page to the babel link:

// Append parameters
unset($_GET['q']);

if(!empty($_GET)){
  $i = 0;
  foreach($_GET as $key => $value){
    if($i == 0)
      $url .= '?'.$key.'='.$value;
    else
      $url .= '&'.$key.'='.$value;
    $i++;
  }
}

Inserted just after line 91 in the "BabelLinks" Snippet (after the $url var has been filled with content).

Might be worth considering integrating into babel, or at least some idea for a more professional implementation.

Greetings,
Kernle 32DLL
