Aha - but the name change was deliberate, because, on Linux, the travis version has nothing to do with the build / test version. For example, you can have an MB_BUILD_VERSION that doesn't exist on travis, as long as it exists on the manylinux and test containers. Notice that, if MB_PYTHON_VERSION is not set, on Linux, it uses the TRAVIS_PYTHON_VERSION.

Out of curiosity, what Python version would that be? A minor "3.5.1" or something?

Yes, fair comment, there are no versions it applies to now. You could imagine Manylinux and the testing images getting Python 3.7 before travis though.
