Having considered the issues above, I investigated forcing audio to appear at the USB-c connector on my 'phone. It transpires that the availability of audio at the 'phone's USB-c connector has been removed as from Android 12! It cannot be restored in developer mode.
One solution is to use a USB soundcard.
Another technologically easier solution is to make a cable using a 4-pole 3.5mm connector for the 'phone's audio in and out, and connect this directly to the radio's mic and speaker-out connectors, with appropriate attenuators and DC-blocking capacitors.
This should work for any version of Android to work with any radio, with no setup required. Of course changes in frequency at either end of the cable will not be reflected at the other, but this was never crucial.
Of course this will not work for those 'phones that have no sockets at all.
