After debugging a little, I found that this error occurs in any filetype that has no enabled makers. It comes from this code segment starting at line 152 in file autoload/neomake.vim:

try
    let default_makers = eval('neomake#makers#'.ft.'#EnabledMakers()')
catch /^Vim\%((\a\+)\)\=:E117/
    return default
finally
    let enabled_makers = neomake#utils#AvailableMakers(ft, default_makers)
    if !len(enabled_makers)
        echom 'None of the default '.ft.' makers ('
                    \ .join(default_makers, ', ').',) are available on '.
                    \ 'your system. Install one of them or configure your '.
                    \ 'own makers.'
        return default
    endif
endtry

If the case where the let fails in the try block, then in the finally clause AvailableMakers tries to use default_makers, which is not defined. Even when the return is called, the finally clause will still be called. Removing the finally clause should fix this error

from neomake.
